His incessant axe to grind with the Astros...which had become personal...made his opinions on them anything but objective and ridiculous as hometown coverage. I've NEVER been more frustrated listening to sports radio than listening to his show. Seriously....I can't listen to it. I have to turn it off.
I'm indifferent about losing Lopez, but man, if Tricky Dick Justice were to leave, I might throw a party. I mean, geez, the sports columns I wrote for my high school newspaper (back in the day) were far wittier and better written than anything he's vomited forth in the Chronicle to date.
I like Lopez, he keeps it real when losers like Justice seem to be paid by the Astros to defend their moves. Oh and btw, his show is pretty good on 790
Where does the notion come that Justice "defends" the Astros? He goes back and forth....ON THE SAME ISSUE!! On many of those, he's flipped to attack the Astros. The Burke/Kent issue in 2004 is the one I remember best. "The Astros are fools for not playing Burke. Bench Kent and let Burke play!!" Then int he offseason: "The Astros totally blew it by not signing Kent! He's indispensible!!!" He was wrong both times.
FOr a large city where sports occupies one of the few significant diversions and communal experiences aside from heat and traffic, Houston's sports media on all fronts is absolutely sub-par.
you like that crap? when the spurs won the championship this season he was arguing that duncan is now better than dream. i wanted to punch him in the face.
never made it to the end of a single thing he wrote. but i'll miss him. he was my opinion barometer ... i could consistently expect him to be on the wrong end of any debate.
Ok I am not some huge Lopez guy but he does keep it real (most of the time). I think his dumbass Dream vs Duncon take was wrong (Duncon is good enough to atleast be in the conversation) but I don't think he tries to stir the pot and play both side like RJ. MadMax, your right Dickie Justic does play both sides but when pushed in a corner he defends guys like Drayton, Lopez calls him out on his bs and pushes what we all know is true as far as he can go. Look everyone is gonna have a different take from time to time on things and even when it's something I strongly disagree with it does not mean I can't read the guys stuff and enjoy it.
Lopez consistently had the safest, most boring columns on the sports page. I'm glad he's relegated to radio hell and ****ing H2 limos where I'll never hear from him again.
I really do feel like he is the worst. I almost left a comment on that blog but then decided there is no reason to be an a$$. I wish him the best in life - as I wish everyone - but I'm sure I will find no shortage of places in which to read mediocre writing (at his best) to gain obvious or misguided information about the Rockets. The guy who commented he is an artist of words made me feel interesting.
He is more than unfair with the Astros...because he created a personal axe to grind with a story he wrote years ago about Drayton. It became very personal, and you can hear it in his voice when he talks about the 'stros today on the radio. If the Astros were playing in the WS every other year, he'd tell you it's not enough. His takes on what the "fans in Houston" think are laughable projections of his own opinions.
Get rid of everyone except Zachary Levine (the unofficial scorer) & Chip Bailey (fan blogger). They're the only ones not full of themselves (Richard Justice) who also don't sound stoned (Jose de Jesus Ortiz.
