The Red Hot Chili Peppers died when Hillel Slovak died.

This is my opinion. You may now proceed to flame me.

Yeah, great marketing. You create a buzz by playing a song over and over in a local station in Houston, Tx causing locals to to probably evenly split on keeping the station on or changing it and the only other people who know about it outside of the city are die hard fans who were going to buy the record anyway. That might have bumped the record sales in Houston, a month before the album comes out mind you, just enough to pay for the kickback necessary to do this. And I'm also sure that as radio stations are currently being subpoenaed for pay for play scandals, that nobody would even blink twice at pulling off such an obvious scam even though they would be setting themselves up for a legal investigation.

But I guess I'm naive and blindly assumed this was just a DJ acting alone doing something different. I didn't think about it one bit, no sir, I did not consider any other factors.

John Frusciante is good, but he's no Hillel. Nothing against him, there was only ONE Hillel, but I do like Frusciante's playing.

It's just too bad that their music is so watered down now. I know they can still funk it up, but for whatever reason (radio) they choose not to anymore.

Love the old school Chili Peppers- Catholic School Girls Rule!

Love the later softer stuff too.

    Under the Bridge, AeroPlane, etc.

That's odd. RHCP just announced their North American tour dates today, and there is no Houston show, or anything in Texas for that matter. But they do play in Boise, Idaho though.

This marketing scam is brilliant, they did it in a city where the tour isn't even coming.

Convince a large market station to go along with it and it just might work. Jantzen wasn't escorted away for his ornery little prank, was he?

They call into the show and do not share tour info. When word gets out, all their fans post on their messageboards, Myspaces, and Livejournals about it and all of a sudden RHCP are on everybody who reads those posts minds.

The next day, tour info is online.

I'm not saying that's how it went down, but it is a possibility.

I like the "sober" version of RHCP better then I like the "sober" version of Metallica.

This post shows clearly that you have no idea how radio works. Do you know what R&R is? If any jock played something that wasn't on the playlist they would get fired immediatly - certainly after a stunt like you described. Not only that but I'd bet that the jocks at the Buzz can't even control what they play. It's all computerized and the only thing a jock can do is add or drop a song to make sure the commercials play on time.

Do you remember the Save the Buzz campain? Call and write in to save the Buzz from going off the air! And guess what? The Buzz was saved only to be moved to a new frequency! Total BS. They were being moved to a frequency that is better picked up over the city (107.5's transmitter is in Liverpool, TX - I've been in it -and the signal is weak). So, how can they make this normally difficult transition into something positive? Marketing campain.

You probably believe that DJs actually play request.

I worked in radio for 5 years (at the station that eventually became the buzz Z-107.5). Actually if I heard the same song over and over for an hour I'd think the station was about to change format.

BTW, notice how much of this thread is devoted to the Chili Peppers? I'd say marketing goal accomplished.

I didn't realize they had never topped the charts before.

Chili Peppers top US music charts for first time

    By Dean Goodman

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Funk-rock band the Red Hot Chili Peppers topped the U.S. charts for the first time in its 22-year history on Wednesday, while Neil Young's tirade against President Bush failed to do much for his sales.

The veteran Canadian rocker's "Living With War" opened at No. 15 with sales of 60,000 units in the week ended May 14, according to data from Nielsen SoundScan. His last album, "Prairie Wind," started at No. 11 last September with 72,000 copies sold its first week.

The Chili Peppers' two-disc set, "Stadium Arcadium," opened with sales of 442,500 copies, a record for the Los Angeles-based quartet.

Its previous best was 282,000 for its last studio release, "By The Way," which opened at No. 2 in 2002. The band's biggest commercial success was the 1999 album "Californication," with sales of 5.3 million copies, according to Nielsen SoundScan.

"Stadium Arcadium" was also tops in Austria, Belgium, Britain, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Japan, Mexico, the Netherlands, Sweden and Switzerland, the band's spokeswoman said. In the United Kingdom, it marked the group's third No. 1. The band is more popular in Europe than at home.

The Red Hot Chili Peppers and Young both record for Warner Music Group Inc..

"Living With War," featuring the single "Let's Impeach the President," did do better than Young's 2003 concept album "Greendale," which opened at No. 22 with 42,000 copies.

In 2002, his September 11-related "Are You Passionate?" opened at No. 10, albeit with 56,000 copies sold. That marked his best start since 1995's "Mirror Ball," a collaboration with Pearl Jam, which debuted at No. 5 with 98,000 copies.

Another veteran had more to smile about. Paul Simon's latest album, "Surprise," opened at No. 14 with 61,000 copies. It marked his highest chart rank since Nielsen SoundScan began tabulating sales in 1991. He also records for Warner Music.

With the Chili Peppers I've always heard that where ever you found them is most likely to be the album you like the best. That is true for me with Californication.

dude, i so remember that in 2001. We took a field trip to the buzz's station and channel 2 kprc. we met Lisa Kendall, who was at the time the mid day DJ. She was talking about how the radio station works. She said crap like, we don't really play requests. When you call in to request something, we save it and use it for another time for when we actually play that song. We met the guy who does Voice Over promo thingies. His speakers are ****ing loud. They have neat stuff on their walls like music memrobillia and autographs and crap like that. Lisa Kendall said what's really going on is that we are switching frequency's with Oldies 94.5, because the frequency is better or whatever.

    neat stuff.
