If I can piggy back on this thread, Dont have a PS3, bout a month or 2 away from that. PS3 has hdmi 1.3 but the HDTV I bought last year (after months of looking) has hdmi 1.2. I didnt buy the TV with Blu Ray or PS3 in mind. Is hdmi 1.3 that noticeable in difference and quality from 1.2? I can see possible buyer's remorse here (though i wont buy another TV) Also, is the 20% of PS2 games that are NOT playable on the 80GB model some of the best games out there or is it a bunch of below average games? I dont want go on a mad hunt for the 60GB if the 10% difference between the models isnt worth the worry.
You won't sweat 1.2 vs 1.3, especially if that HD of yours is sub 1080p, if it is its still not a big deal. You can still enjoy the audio benefits of 1.3 (which is what a lot of people are pumped about) if you have the right setup and receiver/surround.
I bought a 60 GB from ebay last month. It is in great condition and has worked perfectly so far. I only payed like $435 for it (plus 30 for shipping). As long as you can find a well-kept system that is adult-owned, you should be very happy with a 60 GB.
Honestly I don't care about backwards compatibility and would gladly trade my 60GB for a new 80GB to one of you if it wasn't such a PITA to transfer themes, downloads, etc...
Hmm, so do you think this would work: Get the Sony Gift card and the 40G from Walmart, for $299..with you also receiving the $100 gift card. Then when the 80G package comes out you take the 40G back and upgrade?
What's the advantage to playing PS2 games on a PS3? I think Target was selling the PS2 for $99 a while ago, and it would be 100% compatible with PS2 games.
Some pretty notable games seem to have either minor or major issues, including MGS3, God of War, Gran Turismo, some Guitar Hero games, R&C, and the Jak games. I don't really know of a list of notable games that aren't compatible, so I just put the names of those games in the link I gave earlier. There might be others, so if you're concerned about the playability of certain games, you might want to check it out yourself. Some graphical enhancements (upscaling and texture smoothing IIRC). The PS3 might load the games a bit faster, although I really have no idea. Virtual memory cards are nice too. I'm bad at saving often and creating new saves everytime, so that has really come in handy. I think I have ~30 virtual PS2 memory cards...that would be like $900 if I had to buy them . BTW, that reminds me that some PS2s (I think the newest ones) aren't even compatible with all PS2 games (4-5 early titles have issues).
360 owner here. I bought a 40 GB PS3 yesterday just for the Blu Ray. I think it is quite clear that all the rumors about MS coming out with a Blu Ray attachment and/or built-in Blu Ray player are complete hogwash and have been debunked. So, I decided to get me a Blu Ray player and went with the PS3 over a stand-alone Blu Ray player. I wish MS didn't have their heads so far up their asses on this issue when it comes to 360 but...they do...so "F" em. I guess they just really don't want to pay Sony to add Blu Ray to 360...while sticking to their story about how people don't buy gaming consoles to play high definition movies. Yea...right.
everything that RC said *plus*, just the fact that it takes up less physical space and less input sources for your TV and receiver. I already have a 360 and Wii, I don't want to have to hook up both a PS3 and PS2...that'd be r****ded
Current economic conditions lead me to believe that you arent going to see too many price drops anywhere in the near future. Usually in an inflationary environment where the US dollar keeps being worth less, you dont ask for less of em for your goods.
Whatever you do, don't buy your PS3 at the Sony Style store. I bought mine there and I realized a few weeks later that I didn't have an in-store warranty, just a 1 year manufacturers. Good thing I have no issues (knock on wood). Then again, the Sony Style store where I bought my PS3 at had thirteen 80gb consoles left in the entire Houston and surrounding area.
Hey at Sam's Club for 398 you get 1 wireless controller 1 Blu ray Spider man and the 40GB PS3 I am not sure if you get a game Is that a better deal than the usual 399 deal?
Nah, that's actually standard. Still not a bad deal though, if you don't care about PS2 backwards compatibility.
If you're looking to get a PS3 soon, get it at Walmart between 6/1 and 6/7... you'll get a $100 gift card... hotter if you do the sony card thing as well http://forums.slickdeals.net/showthread.php?t=827365
No one knows for sure yet, but it's speculated that the gift card has a blu ray theme (picture on the front) but can be used for anything at walmart. Supposedly, walmart rarely limits gift cards to specific items. If not, I guess you could get use the gift card on blu ray movies and then later return for store credit.
I think I waited to long. The sale at Wal-Mart starts today and I just applied for the Sony card. Hope it comes soon, I really want to get this one.
