I would wait as I'm not sure you can get a new 60GB anymore...I'd be leary of a refurbed one, unless it was really cheap and had a warranty... I have the 60GB and love it...
Ya, I had the 20GB at launch but sold it to a CF member. I like its look. If the 20GB systems are cheaper on ebay then go with that, you can replace the HD very easily or use an external device. Or stream stuff off your PC. If you even use that kind of thing. I part of me thinks you could call Walmart in Halletsville or Normangee and rustle up a new 60GB. But what do I know.
I have a 200GB on my system and have downloaded probably 75% of the demos and trailers for the PS3 onto my system and still have 130GB leftover. I do stream movies and music from my desktop PC so that saves me space. Wonder how long before I have to put in a 320GB HD
^ that is great shiznit right there, yo. Did you do this knowing it's frowned upon by Sony C.E.A. because you void the warranty or is this legal stuff to do? I want to do that as well... think of all the p0r... I mean, the games you could fit in there...
Sony is cool with changing to HD. It doesn't void anything as long as it fits the specs. I think the instruction manual the system comes with has a chapter dedicated to switching out the HD. Goes hand in hand with Sony allowing 3rd party memory storage devices, keyboards, themes, etc...
Not quite. The 20GB model doesn't have WiFi or the extra memory card readers. But other than that, it is pretty much the same. I think the HDD might be slower (smaller cache and/or smaller RPM), but I might be remembering wrong. Probably not noticeable. As KePoW noted, it definitely isn't 95%. Maybe if you count PS1 games (PS1 compatibility is the same for all models, including the 40GB PS3). Yeah, that's a pretty nice resource. Here's the link for anyone that wants to check it out: http://www.us.playstation.com/Support/CompatibleStatus No, there are a few minor differences between the models, similar to the differences I mentioned between the 20GB and 60GB models. Wikipedia has a nice chart that compares the different configurations: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PS3#Retail_configurations It is sort of mentioned there, but I'd also like to mention that the 40GB PS3 consumes less power than the other SKUs. I think it is quieter and cooler as well, but I'm not 100% sure about that. BTW, I would like to clarify that the 80GB PS3 uses a combination of software and hardware emulation. The Emotion Engine is gone and is emulated by the PS3, but the Graphics Synthesizer (the PS2's GPU) is still there as well as a few other components IIRC. These are not in the 40GB PS3, which prevent it from being able to offer the same sort of compatibility for PS2 games. This isn't really a big deal, but I wanted to point that out. If Sony does offer software emulation in the future (for the 40GB PS3, or any other similar models), people might get confused if they already thought that the 80GB PS3 did emulation through software only.
My only advice is to buy the system from Costco. It's going to come in a bundle and it will be more expensive. But when that new 80 gig version you're talking about comes out, you won't have anything to worry about.
I think those were the launch numbers, which improved. I remember seeing a really high percentage right before I bought my 60GB, which is why I purchased it. At least all of my PS2 and PS1 games play properly. Some of the models have less USB ports, and one of them (20GB) didn't have wireless network connectivity. http://review.zdnet.com/consoles/sony-playstation-3-60gb/4505-10109_16-31355103.html breaks down some of the differences.
The manual shows you how to change out the hard drive. I figure if Sony shows you how to do it then it shouldn't void the warranty. *shrugs*
The 20GB and 60GB PS3s are compatible with 98%+ of PS2 games. But the 80GB PS3 is probably only compatible with around 80% of PS2 games, as KePoW pointed out. You're right that this improved after launch though. I think when they originally went this direction (taking out the Emotion Engine), compatibility was around 60% or so IIRC.
I've been hearing the 60 GB is loud and is prone to overheating problems. Can anyone corroborate that? 40 GB is supposedly the most quiet.
not true at least not compared to my 360...the 360 is definitely louder and runs hotter I've never compared it to a 40GB PS3 since I don't have both
no wifi, and id be worried if i were you. Alot of new games on ps3 are requiring like 4gb installs. No chrome trim either like on the 80gb lol
I second what KePoW said. I have a 60GB, and I've had zero overheating problems. The 360 is like a furnace compared to the PS3. Now, if you're asking if the 40GB might run even cooler than the 60GB, that may be true (I don't know anyone who has a 40GB), but by no stretch does that mean the 60GB has overheating problems. The fan certainly works, but it does its job just fine.
40gb runs cooler and is quieter because of IBM's 65nm chip that they use. The rest use the 90nm Ps3 doesn't have over-heating problems and dont buy a cooler for it, that can actualy mess it up. Your ps3's fan can detect temperature and adjust to the ambient temperature, you can do the towel test to check this out, wrap your your ps3 in a towel and watch the fan increase to different levels Your ps3 can recognize when its about to get damaged by heat and it will turn itself off if it gets to that point. I highly recommend not setting your ps3 in an entertainment center with closed doors.
