For a reference on the cost of buying here in Houston, just a few weeks ago I purchased a new home for $240,000. My monthly payment which includes my mortgage, insurance, and escrow comes out to around $1,940/month on a 30 year loan. I was able to lock in a a rate of 5.50% though, which is much better than what most people are able to find these days.
My mother grew up in Newport, Arkansas. When we'd go back to visit her family, we'd often drive into Jonesboro to see a movie or go the Indian Mall. Not that that has anything to do with this thread.
