You want overpriced, try Cantoni on Westheimer. Cool stuff though. My favorite furniture stores are Ethan Allen and Storehouse, when I have the money to buy there.
Believe it or not, Dillards near the Galleria has decent furniture. Some of it gawdy, but some it quite nice and respectable. We've bought a few things at Dillards.
From what I know of Gallery, they have really great customer service. The bad thing about Mattress Mac, his success as a "self-made man" has spawned other furniture guys trying to do the same thing. You know, the "bean bag guys" and the one guy I can't stand, Hilton. OOOOOOH! And that's a fact jack!
I'll probably be buying a matress and box spring from there next week since they deliver the same day.
You removed most of your post but I wanted to paste this column Bill Simmons wrote about the GalleryFurniture.com bowl since you had mentioned. Its pretty funny. http://espn.go.com/page2/s/simmons/011231.html
When I bought my house a few years ago, I went to Gallery and was able to furnish my master bedroom, living room and dining room with quality stuff for under $7K. They delivered it that night and only charged like $25 bucks. Plus, the guys that delivered it, put everything together for me and hauled off the packaging and stuff. THe salesman there are a lil too eager, but we ended up going in there 4 or 5 different times and once we told them that we just wanted to look around, they left us alone. The good thing about their eagerness was, when we came back to finally buy everything, there was a guy right there to help us. The funny thing about Mac, was that he sits up there at the counter at the front door and he was there every time we have been to Gallery. He is all over the place. No doubt he micromanages. When the guys delivered my furniture, I asked one of them, just to make conversation, what it was like working for Mac. They said he is fast paced and demands alot of his employees. They said he is not the easiest guy to work for but that alot of people like working for him because he is the hardest worker there. When we bought our furniture, they gave us a free copy of Mac's biography. My wife asked him to sign it and not only did he do that, he actually wrote a personal message in the book and talked to us for about 5 mins (at the time, my wife was starting a new career and Mac shared his words of wisdom). Actually, the more I think about it, he might have been flirting with her. Anyway, overall, most people are right in that their furniture is a lil pricey but their service makes up for it. For someone like me, customer service is a biggie. I will gladly pay a lil extra for something if the service is top notch.
Just imagine how high Gallery Furniture would be if they didn't have a sale every week... "Come down to Gallery Furniture this weekend for the Second Saturday after the Vernal Equinox sale!!"
Very very funny. I removed it beause I was cranky when I wrote it. But everything about it was true and do hate that a-hole!!!! I'm suprised that trophy didn't have a big golden mattress on it!!! HA HA HA
Alright, I really didn't want to post this, but I just can't help it, has anyone else heard the rumor that Mac is a drug dealer. I have heard it several times, even from a guy who used to be a delivery driver.
I appreciate what he does for the community, but that place is too expensive... I actually buy a lot, if not all of our stuff from Fingers...I have also got some good deals at Foleys by using their coupon...
I've heard that the Drug Law Enforcement has been on his ass for years, but he's really good at snaking out of things!
