Is JJ now what Sam Raimi is to the scary movie genre?

Okay, I'm a pretty good Star Wars nerd but can someone explain why I should be so excited about this news?

Other than SW, I'm not much of a Sci-Fi guy.

JJ's production company Bad Robot produces really great movies. With that said, I'm not thrilled with the new Trek writer and director also being in charge of Star Wars. It just feels wrong.

why? He wasn't even a trek fan. He's been a SW geek all his life. I mean he even made Star Trek like Star Wars and that's why it succeeded.

I am on board with Abrams.

If you have not watched the director's commentary version of the Star Trek movie, I would strongly advise you to do it. It is just fun and amazing listening to these guys talking about how they managed to come up with different things and figure things out, and their love of the magic of movies really shines through. Say what you want about the writers he likes, but his passion and care about putting something fun out there is so far above and beyond what Lucas has ever managed on his best day, this cannot help but be a success.

On that same track, Whedon needs to be in the mix as well, in addition to Brad Bird.

If we can get the next three Star Wars movies made by those three guys, then the universe will be happy. :)

If there has ever been a severely flawed genius, it's George Lucas.

Holy crap, this is what I've been SCREAMING for them to do for years - cover that time period between III and IV.

Show Han Solo meeting Chewbacca and them smuggling around the galaxy in the MF. Show Luke growing up on Tatooine with Obi Wan watching him from afar. Show the Empire invading and occupying other planets. And best of all....show Darth Vader, in his prime, hunting and killing Jedi all over the galaxy.

I don't really care about Boba Fett, frankly.

Simply put....JJ Abrams is one of the biggest names in the Sci-Fi genre, and he's a big time Star Wars fan.

It's very likely he'll be able to do to Star Wars what he did to Star Trek, which is completely revive the franchise.

LOL at them sneaking that in.

I just hope that those films calm Disney's reported desire to wedge a resurrected Vader into the new trilogy.

I'm also an intermediate Star Wars nerd but... answer this for me: will it be more likely to have some other type of villainy scum than the Sith, since ***SPOILER ALERT**** the Emperor was destroyed and his apprentice ***SPOILER ALERT**** Anakin Skywalker aka Darth Vader died, leaving no Sith to fight against?

    That's what SHE said.

Hmmm I'm glad they're doing origin stories, because I was sick of using my imagination. Why is there this need to try and explain everything in the Star Wars universe? The prequels screwed up 'The Force' by basically making it a blood disease (midichlorians or whatever they're called). I'm happy for them to explore other parts of the galaxy and other story lines, but come on, I hate when writers/producers try and make everything fit together. /rant

I'd be pretty surprised if they didn't find a way to bring Sith back.
