HP, my friend, I swear I just read this five times in a row and I still have no idea what you're telling me. This would be an okay time to talk to me like I'm a dummy. I hope you didn't take what I wrote about you badly. What I meant was that even when you get angry and lash out, I don't feel like you're talking down to people. If you were chiding me for trying to pull off a moral arbiter type act, it wasn't my intent. The exchange between glynch and rimbaud just underlined something I'd been thinking about the political threads in the hangout and why they inevitably give me that sort of headache which comes from very mild depression or disappointment. I hope this doesn't violate the once-in-a-BBS-lifetime rule. You know how much I hate to break the rules...

I was chiding you for being a Pollyanna peace maker in a thread about War. I can't imagine that personality on the Houston Chronicle Theatre BBS coming from you.

I'm a terrible typist and wanted to make some corrections to syntax later but I hate that "Hey He Edited His Post" comment at the end. I liked your description of me, and thought it great that you didn't include that twit Achebe.

What I mean is that one can be a Pollyanna peacemaker and make those pleas all the time, but once grummett says "Holy Patronization Batman" that's when we give you one more Pollyanna post to make. You did it perfectly. A plea for civil discourse while bashing yourself. As perfect as it was, that was your last one. If you were to continue doing it, it would become an act and a modus operandi of allowing yourself to rip people yet want to arbitrate other people's ripping.

I think it is easier (and actually healthy) to dismiss sensitivities and drop arrogant stupidity where it stands. For instance, when some hata is lying about Cuttino Mobley, they get one freebie, and then we attack. You think it is easy to come up with 101 unique responses to Cuttino hatas, to stay one step ahead of their drivel. Someone has to do it, and Smeggy sucks at it. Rockets2k begs me to. Here in the hangout, rimbaud, MadMax, Achebe and BK provide a dizzying trajectory of sharp-tongued bullets that help keep stupidity to a minimum.

Oh, and then stupidity also has the humiliating one-liner land mines from Will and grummett to avoid. Being ripped comes in many forms...but it always dismisses people's sensitivities. Getting personal or bashing someone's culture is another matter, but that really does not happen much here. Calling someone's argument stupid is not personal, imo.

Exactly what the hell does offend people. Sometimes I think the mere act of "Disagreement" offends people or unsettles them. Not where I grew up it didn't. What is offensive in a BBS context. The whole beauty of a BBS is that you argue topics that you rarely can in real life. Is it a monthly Salon where there's a moderator to let everyone speak...or is it a "lively" debate....or is it a cathartic opportunity to challenge opinions that you despise and generally ignore or stay away from in real life I mean, I really don't think I understand what is and isn't offensive. I have yet to feel that towards myself. Actually, that's not true...I really get offended when people try to jump in the middle of an argument to provide unsolicited mediation...Sit down, Jimmy Carter...I'll call you if I need you. The closest is feeling I get is "damn, he beat me--I'm wrong and embarrassed."

PS: wifes out of town. I'm cooking huge batches of salsas and feeding my cc.net addiction. and rimbaud, I'm wearing a tie-dye shirt with an apron. And I'm taking myself too seriously by planning on taking my super salsas to Valhalla tonight for a bartenders ball.

OK, I have to give glynch serious respect for being sincere. I really thought that cheap shot would draw him out, but he kept his word.

I often think I would be more well thought of if I could avoid my occasional explosions. But then refraining over a long period is what might cause the explosions. I appreciate the 'almost.'

Fair enough. As I wrote to someone else on the bbs in a backchannel, I don't mind arrogance as long as its not directed my way, or as long as I'm directing it someone else's way.

OK, then I don't expect to see you say you're glad Stalin got ANYTHING, much less the bomb. No disagreement that you can be a socialist without being a communist, just look at Grizzled.

Rimbaud, I wonder if I know you.

1. Being left out of your Hall of Fame Posters list.

2. People who get into debates and then realize that they don't know the subject as well as they thought. They exit/bail on/abandon the thread rather than raise the white flag.

Damn, Hayes well put.
You know last night my wife and I went out with some Jewish friends for dinner. They like to talk politics. Based on a past experience we avoid discussing Israel and the Paestinians.

We did get to share a few Jibes at Bush since they vote Democratic.:)

Batman, don't feel bad...Ive re-read that response 5 times and I aint sure how to take the mention of my nym...it doesn't happen very often, so its hard to figger out..

and to finish out another meaningless post...I'll finish rimbaud's list
