http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/sports/3765700.html April 2, 2006, 7:32PM Reggie Bush runs 4.33, has 40-1/2 inch vertical jump Copyright 2006 Houston Chronicle Former USC running back Reggie Bush (5-11, 202) ran his 40-yard dash in 4.33 seconds during the university's pro workout today. The Heisman Trophy winner had a 10-foot-9 long jump and a 40½-inch vertical jump. Bush outbenched many of the USC linemen with 24 bench presses at 225 pounds.
4.3 vs 5.0, that's only like a second or so. Really not that far off if you think about it. Bush is a great, great athlete. But, I'm just as impressed with Justice's vertical leap. I mean, for a guy his size, that's incredible. Vernon Davis, M. Williams put up freakish numbers as well, and they're bigger than Reggie. Michael Huff put up similar numbers and I believe he's a little bigger. This is not to take away from Reggie. Great, great athlete and player. I look forward to seeing him.
Anybody know anything about drug testing with respect to these workouts? Since they're not official, and since the players are no longer officially affiliated with the NCAA and not yet signatories to the NFL CBA, I would imagine that neither body has the power to compel them to do so. If it is indeed a gray area in which no testing is done, I would imagine the temptation to use in the short term and becme the proverbial "workout warrior" a la Tony Mandarich is huge. This isn't addressed to Bush or USC in particular, just something I thought of.
I would have been let down with anything in the 4.4s, but it is still good to see that Reggie put it down when he had to. I for one will welcome him glady if the Texans make him the first pick.
Don't know how much credibilty this holds, but I saw this blurb on profootballtalk.com...but I'm thinking this must come from McClain just to throw out that last bit of hope for the Texans taking Young REGGIE RUNS A 4.4 Despite a report from Gil Brandt of NFL.com that Heisman winner Reggie Bush put up a 4.33 in the 40 on Sunday's pro day workout in L.A., a league source tells us that Bush was hand timed at 4.4 -- on a fast track. That projects to anywhere from a 4.45 to a 4.5 on a grass surface, and it means that Bush doesn't have Michael Bennett-type sprinters' speed. All things considered, the Bush and Leinart workouts muddy the top of the draft, opening the door for the possibility that, in the end, Texas quarterback Vince Young could be the first overall pick, with or without a trade out of the top spot by the Houston Texans.
But like Tiki Barber said, he really didn't start playing his best until he built up his lower body which allowed him the strength to break tackles. He could have had 40 reps for all I care. When the league puts a weight bench at the 50 yard line I might start caring.
Yeah, that article is bs. I'm sure you can find some scout that hand timed Bush at 4.28. I will go with the electrical timed number over an error proned hand time.
Did anyone catch Fox Sports Sunday? They ran like a 15-second thing about Bush saying he ran a 40 "somewhere between 4.37 and 4.50" and then ran a 2-minute piece on Vince Young appearing at the Harris County Juvenille Detention Center talking to troubled youths. Wonder where their loyalties lie? Then, channel 13 ran a long story including a sit-down with Bush and Bob Allen proclaimed, "there is no secret - the Texans will take Bush with the number one pick" and even talked to Bush about his home search in Houston. Funny how different the stations can report a story.
I think people should stop arguing Bush V/S Young and should be looking forward for Young V/S Leinart. Both Bush and Leinart looked good. I heard on ESPN that leinart completed all of his passes.
Bo Jackson ran a 4.19, and Deon Sanders was in the 4.21 range I believe. Bush at 4.33 is great, but I believe Parker in Pittsburgh runs faster than that. DD
Oakland was like the only team NOT present at his UT Pro-Day. Look for the raiders to draft someone else. p.s. They got Aaron Brooks the same day they didn't watch VY work out.
