I can always count on you, Bob...but what is the other 1/16? I can't make a full judgement of you until I know exactly what it is. If it is something cool, then maybe we can be friends (although the :( before "French" makes me suspicious).

The issue at hand is Affirmative Action, not voting. I know your bad with numbers so let me break it down to you "brother". If what people on this board have posted is true, that minorities are a 50/50 split on Affirmative Action, and minorities make up roughly 30% of the population then that means that 15% of the total population, that happens to be minority, is against Affirmative Action. If whites make up 70% of the population, then in order to make your 70% of Americans are against Affirmative Action numbers work, that means that 78% of whites have to be against Affirmative Action. THAT is substantially higher than the rates against AA in minority communities given that (which I'm assuming is true because it's been posted here so often) minorities are at a 50/50 split. So minorities are 50% against and whites are 78% against. So who's voting on self-interest and principle here if these numbers are accurate? And really spare me Affirmative Action disadvantaging whites to much of a degree at all. Whites, by virtue of being the overwhelming majority, have the least to gain by abolishing it and the least to lose by maintaining it.

There is a *miniscule* number of blacks and hispanics who oppose affirmative action.

This is factually inaccurate. Nice try buddy.

Linda Chavez has a hispanic background. She would benefit from affirmative action policies, such as the one at the University of Michigan. For her to argue against this policy shows that she is capable of seeing past her immediate self-interest (the benefit received through AA) and is able to take a principled stand on the issue. I really don't think this is a difficult concept to grasp.

Linda Chavez has nothing to gain from Affirmative Action. In fact because she's a conservative politico who happens to be a minority (not exactly common), Republicans and big government conservatives are likely to bend over backwards to keep her in the fold. Chavez is probably fairly wealthy and has certainly graduated from college. How exactly is she gaining anything from arguing for Affirmative Action? Her gain is in being a good conservative, who happens to be a minority, and arguing the case on behalf of what even black Republicans have recently said is a lily white Republican Party. Linda Chavez is gold to the Republican Party.

I sense a growing frustration with your posts (more name calling, insults, cursing -- less substance (if that's even possible)). To accuse Pole and myself of "race-baiting" is laughable. You started the thread and we have chimed in with rationale, objective comments -- without engaging in 3rd grade insults. Your behavior can not be characterized in the same fashion -- which is most likely the result of immature thought development and the inability to control your own emotions.

Move on Mr There's Only Racism in Georgia. Your stances on race on these boards have been completely without any merit whatsoever. In fact you've frequently, like right here, tried to argue against the tide of basic common sense like you're some kind of dorky comic book character. Keep up the bad work, it's kind of funny.

Let's stand back and admire the inherent contradiction in Timing's logic. He first claims that minorities are 50/50 split on the issue of affirmative action. While this assertion is completely invalid and probably more closely resembles a 90(for)/10(against) breakdown, we'll play along for now. Next, Timing says that it is "not exactly common" for a minority to be conservative. Oops! Timing, affirmative action is an issue that the democratic party supports. If not many minorities are in the Republican party, how then can 50% of minorities be against affirmative action?

GAME, SET, MATCH -- Thanks for playing rookie

Poor white kids aren't poor because of racial discrimination and slavery. Hispanics and blacks are statistically far more poor than whites and specifically for blacks they're far more poor because of racism and slavery so the way white kids and black kids came to be poor isn't the same and I feel it does a disservice to those who've been fighting for civil rights and equality to say it's the same. I really feel that's an important distinction that needs to be made. They're not just poor, they're poor for a specific reason. It's just another way politicians in this country can pretend and appease a "Southern Strategy" by in effect saying that racism and the cummulative effect of the past has no effect on minorities today. Having said that however, when you fix the lower levels of education in this country then you fix it for kids of all races so that's a great start. Unfortunately, Bush would rather skim off the top of the problem and trash the only remedy that exists for minorities without presenting a real plan for minorities or poor whites, that actually works unlike what he did in Texas, to deal with the issue.

DallasISD has the second-highest taxable property value in the state behind only Austin.

The property value per student in Dallas ISD is $320,262. Across the way in Fort Worth, it's only $176,988. The state average is $215,121.

In a district that's 75% economically disadvantaged, it appears they have a significant amount of potential property tax revenues to draw from. Having that large business district can be a boon to property tax collections. As a matter of fact, many housing developments are, for many years in their early development, etc, property tax losers in that it costs more to provide the services than the city collects in property taxes. Just ask McKinney where this issue has been the topic of just about every P&Z meeting for the past several years.

My post was in response to your personal attack, fella. This topic involves Affirmative Action however most every thread on this board involves white people and the majority of posters in the Hangout are probably white people. What a ludicrous statement.

Oh...and you might not want to act as though you have a corner on the intelligence market...especially if you reread your post that started this whole thread.

Oh, yessir Mr Refman. I live to appease your cornered market of morality and judgement. Thanks for coming down from on high to correct my silly ways. You're so smrt, s m r t, smrt.

I'm fairly certain that the size of freshman classes at UT has risen a lot since the 10% rule was instituted. So even though the actual number of first year students might be close, as a % of a student body it's still less.

Except that inner city schools are likely to be much older and in need of more repair and in need of more security because of the poor neighborhoods they're in and possibly having to pay higher teacher/administrator salaries to get the same teachers that would go to suburban schools. Assuming that the $10M is simply for all costs, the inner city kid will always get less spent on his education.

You continue to amaze with your cluelessness. There is no requirement to be pro Affirmative Action when you register to be a Democrat. In addition, most people in the US are Democrats so following your weird logic, how are most people against AA? Christ...

As for the stats, they were posted by The Freak I believe so go check Fox News and see what you can find buddy. If I can I'll go find some actually fair and impartial poll on the issue.

I don't know. There was a CNN.com article about it today. Here's the link if you want to check it out yourself: http://www.cnn.com/2003/LAW/01/16/texas.affirmativeaction.ap/index.html

To my reading, the size of the freshman class has stayed roughly equal, but it doesn't come out and say that, I don't guess.

From Zogby International. I think people play with the wording to get a desired result but here are several polls. 90% for? Pfft. TJ gets shut out yet again, how surprising.

    http://www.zogby.com/soundbites/ReadClips.dbm?ID=4938

A 1991 Gallup Poll found 83 percent of all respondents, and 69 percent of blacks, rejecting the statement that ''to make up for past discrimination, women and members of minority groups should be given preferential treatment in getting jobs and places in college,'' and choosing instead the statement that ''ability, as determined by test scores, should be the main consideration.''

A December 1997 New York Times/CBS News poll showed 65 percent of all respondents, and 36 percent of blacks, opposing programs that ''to make up for past discrimination... give preferential treatment to racial minorities.'' Twenty-six percent of all respondents, and 51 percent of blacks, supported such programs.

The December 1997 Times/CBS News poll found 69 percent of all respondents, and 63 percent of blacks, choosing ''race should not be a factor'' when asked how ''equally qualified college applicants'' should be treated. Twenty percent of all respondents, and 25 percent of blacks, chose ''accept [the] minority to achieve racial balance.'' (In fact, most top universities systematically prefer black and Hispanic applicants, even over whites and Asians who are clearly better qualified.)

A January 2000 Zogby International poll of university students showed 77 percent of all respondents, 52 percent of blacks, 71 percent of Hispanics, and 78 percent of Asians rejecting the statement that ''schools should give minority students preference in the admissions process.'' And 96 percent of all respondents said that ''diversity of ideas and high academic standards are more important to a quality education than achieving ethnic diversity.''

Ninety percent of the 756 blacks polled by Paul Sniderman and Thomas Piazza for their recent book, Black Pride and Black Prejudice, opposed admitting a black applicant over a white applicant with SAT scores 25 points higher. (In fact, average SAT scores for blacks at elite universities can be 150 to 200 points, or more, below those of whites and Asians.)

And the poll that shows what percentage of minorities are for/against affirmative action is where? It's not in any of the polls above, that's for sure. Keep trying, rookie

Define what "rightfully belongs" to them? You can't. And if you could it certainly wouldn't be a spot in a classroom or a job (which is the result of AA) it would be something tangible. It seems you'll not be happy until something is taken from whitey. Why is that?

Attack, attack, attack...same thing people ALWAYS do when they have no real argument to make.

so you want to help poor minority kids...but to hell with the poor whites? Gee...I don't know why I would EVER question your motives.

No...you live to paint all whites as racists. Sheesh...

Not true. In 2000, they had 50,000 students and undertook an initiative to reduce enrollment. Also, according to the University of Cincinnati...
"The Hopwood case is a benchmark signaling that things will be different. Our model is not just an 'interesting possibility' for others now. It's now the template for Texas campuses who must foster programs and a campus climate that are receptive and welcoming to a diverse population,

Well then considering that inner city schools typically have more kids enrolled, you'll be thrilled to know that they get more money under my plan, and due to economies of scale, more will go to education...particularly after the repairs and updates are completed and paid for.

    Yeah...I'll bet you will.

Yor response to the 1990's GAO study that people who murder blacks get less harsh sentences than those who murder whites, was that wasn't there a rise in gang violence during that time and that people who kill gang members probably don't get as harsh sentences as those who kill teachers. That's what you said. If I had the search function I'd show it to you since you seem to have such a clouded memory, perhaps because you're so fond of being "politically incorrect" and can't keep track of your outrageous statements.
