I've really avoided these war threads lately, but I find it almost deplorable that Bush has reverted to using over 10 year old evidence to justify the war. He should just stick to the party line "the world is a better place without Saddam.

$87 BILLION for Iraq and Afghan....

    for a lil comparison

Federal spending on Elementry, secondary and vocational Education : $34 Billion

Federal spending on Public Housing Assistance $29 Billion

Federal spending on Food and nutrition assistance $37 Billion

$87 Billion to Iraq/Afhganistan compared to $100 Billion to help educate, house, feed our own people...

anyone else a lil disturbed by these numbers?

to put that in perspective, that's 8.7 billion ten dollar bills

870 million one hundred dollar bills

87 million one thousand dollar bills

and that includes the big landing on the aircraft carrier by Skippy Jr.

    such a deal! oy

Leave no Iraqi behind. That's only about $3600 per Iraqi, which has got to be about 10 years annual income.

Hey, here's an idea: California needs 38 billion. Texas needs about 10 billion. They represent about 25% of the US population. Just think, for 87 billion we could probably meet ALL the state budget short falls. Talk about a boost to the economy here!

Skippy Jr. has no idea what he is doing.

Maynard, Friendly you got it wrong. Spending on education, housing assitance, childhood nutrition, even veteran's benfits is just welfare to these guys.

Now some juicy weapon systems or food for the troops,as Halliburton and other friends supply these, are proper government priorities.

I know how dare I suggest that. It is just that almost without fail that all the government spending they like enrichs them and all the government spending they don't like doesn't.

After a while you don't have to be a conspiracy nut to think that just isn't a coincidence.

The Bush's hate government; it is just that almost all the money they have ever made involves trading on their government connections and they love to run for public office. Any connection?

It is all about FEAR, creating it, propping it up, and shoving it down our throats..

without fear, Republicans would never get elected

they want you to be afraid

it is the only way they can get away from their crap..

the Patriot Act for example...only fear is to blame for that POS getting passed..

Just like FDR said...The only thing we have to fear, is fear itself..

If we had to repeal tax cuts to pay for the war on terror, who would be "down?"

Education has generally been the responsibility of the states. Include that spending and you will get a different #.

We aren't a 3rd world country, we don't need billions of dollars to educate and feed our own people. We can work for our food.

And I'm guessing a lot of that money is not for social programs.

Who were the ones saying the Iraq war would turn into a quagmire? Who said the war on terrorism would attract more terrorists? Who said corporations were going to ruin the country? Who said all our jobs would go oversees due to free trade? Who said the Patriot Act destroys our civil liberties?

If you are talking about "the Bush Taxcuts", then I am down.
Elect a new President and maybe it will happen.

    As a side note:

Does anyone recall a President who has made so few "Addresses to the Nation" or press conferences during a war?
    I can't.

Rock on, Maynard. The most potent weapon in the hands of the oppressor is the mind of the oppressed. If we're scared all the time, we're gonna follow what we're told.

liberals, commie-hippies and other bush-haters...and so far they have been right. initially the bush admin. was playing this off like it would be quick, easy and monetarilly self-sufficient. "iraqi oil will fund the reconstruction of iraq!" now bush asks for $87 BILLION for this comming fiscal year alone!
when are we getting our troops out??? no one, including the president knows!
what is the plan to restore order and hand back power to the iraqis and what is being done to see it through??? who knows! after 4 months is there any sign of the iraqis forming their own government?
we are in a quagmire, not yet of viet nam proportions, but a quagmire it is.

Who said the war on terrorism would attract more terrorists?
liberals, commie-hippies and other bush-haters, and though there is now way to definitavely prove this one way or the other, im sure that us being there is not helping matters any in the middle east and islamic world.

Who said corporations were going to ruin the country?
liberals, commie-hippies and other bush-haters...and so far they are right. fcc deregulation for example, corporate scandals (some involving members of our administration), unjustified tax-cuts in the face of expensive wars and a poor economic climate.

Education has generally been the responsibility of the states. Include that spending and you will get a different #.

YOu can say "traditionally", but it appears that we are spending this amount of federal money. When in tradition the 1800's?

We aren't a 3rd world country, we don't need billions of dollars to educate and feed our own people. We can work for our food.

So you're against publicly funded schools isn't this tradition?

ARen't you the poster we had a while ago who was furious that we have a school lunch program for poor kids?

Did you find how much the states spend on education? Or does that not count? Yeah, a bunch of rednecks run the states.

Why would I be against publicly funded schools? But let me guess, you are against vouchers, but if you had enough money, you would send your kid to a private school.

    That wasn't me.
