    The NAACP's Gratitude
    July 13, 2004; Page A14

Don't blame President Bush for skipping the NAACP's annual convention in Philadelphia this week. The last time he attended was when he ran for President four years ago. The civil rights group later thanked him with its infamous James Byrd television ad, which suggested that Governor Bush was indifferent to the murder of a black Texan who had been dragged behind a pickup truck driven by whites.

The relationship has gone downhill from there. At its 2002 convention in Houston, NAACP President Kweisi Mfume spoke of a "right-wing conspiracy" against blacks and accused Mr. Bush of waging racial warfare in America. Julian Bond, the group's chairman, has more recently said that Mr. Bush and other Republicans appeal to a racist "dark underside of American culture" and draw "their most rabid supporters from the Taliban wing of American politics." The GOP's "idea of equal rights," Mr. Bond told a MoveOn.org rally last month, "is the American flag and the Confederate swastika flying side by side."

Part of this is the NAACP's effort to help Democrats scare up black turnout in an election year. But it also speaks to the group's frustration at Mr. Bush bypassing liberal elites and courting black voters in other ways. The President has taken his faith-based initiatives directly to black churches and local community leaders, who have been receptive. And Mr. Bush has blacks serving in more senior positions than any Administration in history.

Any organization that makes itself into a wholly-owned subsidiary of one party shouldn't expect to be honored with the presence of a President from the other. We're all for racial outreach, but President Bush can't be expected to lead with his chin.

Frustrated? LOL, I think despite Bush' "efforts" here, the fact that he's still polling around 10% or less among African Americans, despite his oh-so-successful inroads at black churches, and affirmative action hiring practices, these pasty WSJ douchebags should be the frustrated ones, that African Americans will, once again, gladly vote for a rich New Englander by a wide, wide margin rather than the pretend "regular guy".
