So does that mean that Dubai would still own the lease and just subcontract the work to Americans?

    Sigh.

China can't buy "strategic" assets in the US. Companies owned by families of Indian descent shouldn't owned European companies. People of Arab descent can't own any assets in the US.

I'm so glad our politicians are watching out for our best interests. And I can't wait for foreign companies to start rejecting American ownership of their assets.

Sam, the democrats on the board are the ones b!tching and moaning. That is what I'm talking about. Were the democrats in Washington not supportive of this new arrangement? I realize the House republicans had a role in the thing.

Who is mortimer, by the way?

something doesn't pass the sniff test. NBC White House correspondent David Gregory wonders whether the White House coordinated Dubai Ports World’s announcement today:

    Cover for the White House?

Posted by David Gregory, Chief White House Correspondent
    (02:14 pm ET, 03/ 9/06)

If you saw today's White House briefing, none of us could believe that Scott McClellan was backing off the President's threat to veto any attempt to derail the ports deal -- allowing Dubai Ports World to assume management of major U.S. seaports. But he was, and minutes later we find out there is a deal: DPW will transfer management of the U.S. ports to a U.S. entity, thus giving the White House some cover.

The White House says they only knew of "rumors" of a deal, but one wonders whether there was coordination between the White House, DPW and Sen. John Warner, R-Va., who announced the agreement. It's clear the White House knew, especially after meeting with congressional leaders this morning, that Congress was prepared to buck him on this.

No one here wanted the President to veto his own party, so leave it to DPW, the state-run company no one apparently trusts to manage U.S. ports, to be the great peace broker in Washington!

    More to come of course.

The Democrats and left-wingers on this board will b**** about anything that Bush does, even if he does something that runs parallel to the Democratic party's stated positions.

I've learned it's better to not even try to reason with their ignorance.

The Republicans and right-wingers on this board will praise anything that Bush does, even if he does something that conflicts with the Republican party's stated positions and long-time platform issues.

I've learned it's best to laugh at their ignorance.

What did Bush do in this situation that ran parallel to the Democratic party's stated positions?

This thread contains a lot of whining about democrats whining.

What do the prominent Republican thinkers of this BBS think ABOUT THE SUBSTANCE of the transaction?

Personally, I don't know what to think and can see both sides. In an ideal universe, I'd probably let the transaction itself slide due to its reported neglibible impact on security - but I can also see where it might be fodder for trouble --

-- which leads me to the tangential issues surrounding it; Our elected leaders in the white house and congress (who happen to be of one party), 5 years after 9-11 almost, appear at this point to have done absolutely zero with respect to port security, and seem to be content to just "outsource" away like they did with airport security - a recipe that proved disastrous. Likewise, the fact that this appeared to be the product of backroom deals among insiders that the President couldn't even be bothered to know about is also disconcerting.

...so Aceshigh, Mortimer, the rest - what say you AS TO THE SUBSTANCE of the transaction? Should it go forward or not? Which group of Republicans do you align yourself with?

maybe now Haliburton get the contract, and will assume it's rightful role as guarantor of our nation's security, and persistent burr in the side of the dnc.

We have a weak president, he should have stuck with the port deal but he let a few paranoid people get the better of him. Coward.
