The funniest political sticker I've ever seen actually has no joke intended.

It's that old "Sportsmen for Bush" sticker/sign.

Any real "sportsman" who enjoys the outdoors, hunting, fishing, camping, or otherwise, should be absolutely livid with the environmental record of George W. Bush.

I can't wait to bag my first three-headed buck though!

Please enlighten us on why you feel his environmental record is bad.

    I eagerly await your response.

Not to derail the thread, but I'll bite...

Under George W. Bush's leadership as governor of Texas.

    Texas is/was:

#1 in the Emission of Ozone Causing Air Pollution Chemicals
#1 in Toxic Chemical releases into the Air
#1 in use of Deep Well Injectors as method of Waste Disposal
#1 in counties listed in top 20 of Emitting Cancer Causing Chemicals
#1 in Total Number of Hazardous Waste Incinerators
#1 in Environmental Justice Title 6 complaints
#1 in production of Cancer causing Benzene & Vinyl Chloride
#1 Largest Sludge Dump in Country

Because he has gutted EPA regulations and overruled the findings of scientists in order to be more friendly to big business. He has allowed power plants to bypass regulations requiring air scrubber installations in the case of plant overhauls. He has increased permissable levels of mercury in groundwater over the objections of the scientists who studied the issue.

Everything Bush has done regarding the environment has been negative. I would challenge you to name even a single positive environmental policy from this administration.

That is why I am a sportsman for Kerry/Edwards. Last year or early this year, a large group of concerned GUN OENERS/HUNTERS pettioned the white house to voive their concern about the administration's environmental polices. Really, does a former Timber Lobyist in Gayle Norton have ANY business as the Secretary of the Interior?? Riiight...no conflict of interest there...

Don't misunderstand, Max... the neighborhood we've lived in for the last several years had a reputation as a strong Republican bastion long before we moved there. The environment is fine in the neighborhood. Most of the folks out here are very nice, it's safe, compared to most "suburban" neighborhoods this close in, although in Austin it's considered kinda on the edge of town. (and seeming closer all the time) We moved here because it had excellent public schools and was safe. And the "amenities" are terrific.

A couple of the best known posters live out here, DD and Cohen, and their politics mirrors that of the moderate Republicans/conservative Democrats that used to be so common in Texas and the country. (my apologies to both if I shouldn't have said that, or got it wrong) As a matter of fact, this is the most politically active, large (thousands of homes) neighborhood in Austin, excepting the central city Democratic areas. So the whole yard sign/bumper sticker thing for us isn't because of the neighborhood, it's because of the current brand of Republican state government, for which Perry and Craddick are just front men, that we have to be concerned about. I wouldn't hesitate to put political signs in the yard, otherwise. In '96, we did, for Clinton/Gore. We just didn't do bumper stickers that would be seen everywhere my wife went to around the Capitol. It's just gotten amazingly worse now, so we're not taking chances.

To tell you the truth, if I were an attorney, and lived in a neighborhood that "prohibited" political yard signs during elections, and I had the time, I'd sue. It's a clear violation of freedom of speech. No question about it. I don't think it would hold up in court for a New York minute. You're an attorney... do you think it would, after giving it some thought?

Anyway, good discussion, and don't feel sorry for us, folks... the worm will turn. ;)
(although my wife will be retired, and doing consulting, long before it happens)

    Deckard,

If you don't mind me asking, what part of Austin do you live in?

I live in Cedar Park now near the lake, and it's amazing how things are growing around here. They are building the world's biggest HEB by my house. How things change in the 13 years I've lived in Austin. I would have never thought I would be a Cedar Chopper.

We should see a game together sometime this season. Maybe take a road trip down to Spurs country for the Rockets-Spurs game.

I'll have to ponder it, rockbox. I'm a little "touchy" about my anonymity here, because of some of the things I've posted. It's most likely stupid of me, but if I manage to get over it, I'll send you an e-mail. There are a couple of other folks here from the area that would be fun to do things with as well. :)

You've been here for 13 years? Yes, things have changed a bunch. We've lived here since 1980, so I still go into shock, sometimes, when I drive through a part of town, or a part of town that used to be the country, and it's radically different. Heck, in the 9 or so years I've lived in this neighborhood, it's changed tremendously, especially the last few. I used to hear cows mooing at night, and see zillions of stars if the weather cooperated. Now, the cows are long gone, and the light polution is really criminal. They use these gigantic towers to light parts of the freeways out here, like the 290/Mopac interchange, that just wash everything out. Some engineer's "bright idea", no doubt, to save money. How about some thought to quality of life?? (argh!)

Anyway, thanks again, and I will think about it.

btw- I'd never put a sticker on paint. Glass, maybe.

    I saw one on an attorney Land Rover withsomething along this line;

    "Texas is bigger than France"

This was when the French were try being a torn in the USA's flesh prior to the Iraqi onslaught. I thought it was dumb. I thought a US trained attorney should know better but oh well...

hell....all I own is a 2000 Monte Carlo SS and I wouldnt be caught dead putting a sticker on it. Besides the cheapness that RMT talks about....why would I ruin a perfectly good paintjob with a sticker that wont come off without taking paint with it?

window....maybe...but even then I havent seen one that doesnt take away from the looks of the car.

Hey Deck....if you are worried about anonymity, I got the perfect disguise for ya for Rockets gettogethers...[IMG]
