Outlaw, I like that idea; retirement of jersey number, I don't think so. That would be like giving the Congressional Medal of Honor for minor achievements, it diminishes the value of the award. I really liked Bullard, but he was an essentially a journeyman player. He was never on the All-Star team and is not a future Hall of Famer.

If we were to hang his jersey it would greatly diminish the achievment of getting your jersey hung.

Also, does anyone know if they're planning on hanging Barkley's jersey?

Okay, I understand that Bull never wowed people with his stats, and as such, will never have his jersey retired, but could people stop calling him a journeyman? The man played for the Rockets his whole career save two seasons now (one with Atlanta and this season).

Bull was a fine roleplayer and a helluva NBA Live player, but to retire his number and hang it in the rafters would be a tad excessive.

Okay how hard would we rip the lakers if they retired Kurt Rambis's number. Or if the Pistons retired John Salley. I love Bull but its a tad excesive to reitre a guys number when he was just role player. Are the rockets going to reitre moochies number when he retires?

i dont know if anyone mentioned this yet, because i only scanned over the posts briefly but...

some guy named Ralph Sampson was, if im not mistaken, #50 for the rockets. are you saying that Matt Bullard was a more significant player for the rockets than ralph?

i would have to say that retiring Sampsons number 50 makes more sense then Bullards number 50.

and if youre retiring bullards # you got to retire Eddie Johnsons #, that ultimately meaningless shot against the jazz was the most dramatic beautiful thing ive ever seen, and my favorite rocket memory. Johnson did more for the rockets than bullard ever did.

    :(

Damn you guys take me too seriously, well duh of course Matt's number won't be retired. Jesus guys, thanks for helping me out there...

The point is Matt was a great Rocket and probably still bleeds Rockets red and yellow, unlike someone else who was a pain in the ass for almost an entire season and decided to bail for Toronto and take shots at his former coach and higher-ups...

Why is Bullard such a great Rocket? Because he had some good quotes?

I bet if he'd just kept his mouth shut, nobody would give a ****.

Bullard didn't contribute much, if anything, to the '94 championship. He wasn't on the team for the '95 championship.

I liked Bullard okay until he called out Hakeem in the middle of a contract negotiation over the summer. Now I really couldn't care less about him. The fact that he doesn't get on the floor much for the Hornets should tell you what you need to know about whether or not he needs his number retired.

Well I don't exactly remember any good quotes from Bull, hell if Chucky Brown or Charles Jones spent 9 years with us, I'd probably think highly of them too.

I'd hoped it would've been possible to compliment one player without trying to put down another player.

Contrary to what you think, some leaders do well by example, and don't have to be vocal leaders. Kenny Smith talked about Olajuwon's regal presence and leadership by example. Othella Harrington has always given praise to Olajuwon for helping him out.

It's also been mentioned before that Olajuwon, Actually taught his moves to opposing players, and even proposed the ten best centers in the league get together every summer and teach each other two moves. That way they might give up 2 moves but they gain 18 new ones. That's not egotistical at all. He might have more pride and even be overzealous to the point where is pride distorted reality or was a negative, but that's different than being egotistical.

So you can have your opinion of whether he was a good leader, or not, but that's not everyone's including some of the teammates that he lead, so if you want to hold on to your opion fine, but stating it as 'contrary to what people think' makes it seem like your opinion is more valid than other peoples.

Hi, perhaps we haven't met before. I'm most of Rockets fandom. We like Matt Bullard. We like him a lot. Matt was one of those fan favorite people that actually got some playing time unlike Scotty Brooks. He didn't bring much except a shot, but it was deadly. He tried hard and we loved him for it. His cult hero name was "Air Bull." He may not have been the most talented (although one time he did block two shots in one game) and the intention of this thread was not serious so there is no need to speak ill of our hero. If you'd like to learn more about Air Bull and his fans you can go to your local library or visit some sites dedicated to him.

    Thank you,

    Rockets fans
