I'm happy to report to you all that I will be building a computer for my first time. Would there be any "gotchas" or special tips or maybe some warnings that you guys who know how to build PCs want to share to a PC-buildin' virgi--er, beginner? After considering both Directron and Fry's for parts, I decided to go with the latter. I hear the former uses bogus parts being used as genuine. What do you all think about that? I need a beefy computer and would like to edit video and photography. Maybe I'll list all the parts when I do get them, or maybe I'll listen to some recommendations. I have about $1500 to spend, and here are my minimum specs for some parts: [rquoter]Full tower at least 700 W of power intel i7 for up to 3.5 GHz and compatible board 12 GB RAM, ~~ 2TB for storage, SSD if possible for system drive Video Card with at least 1G of RAM Monitor: at least 20" that's what she said[/rquoter] Seems like I'll be going to Fry's... I live somewhere in between the 59S and the 45N stores, so I don't know still where I'll be, but it will be either tonight or tomorrow. They seem to have good deals in today's flyer. Any recommendations, tips, etc.? I will appreciate your help if you have any.
Don't be shy.... Also, you won't find a better deal on a monitor than this. Everyone should take notice. http://www.ebay.com/itm/220976981533?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2649 http://www.pcper.com/reviews/Displays/Achieva-Shimian-27-Monitor-Review-1440p-IPS-Display-Under-350
I used to recommend people to newegg for everything computer related. This was back when they had excellent customer service and everything was free return with no stocking fees. The newegg service has gone downhill since then. I would still use that site to read the reviews and then do a price comparison. If the price on newegg is same as Amazon, I would buy from Amazon.
I am at Fry's. I'm a cart-loading fool. I don't think I can wait for delivery, but I can see how NewEgg has good deals. I'll post my setup. Last thing I'm looking for is a video card. Is the Nvidia 550 a good one, or... should I "download a video card"?
If you're gonna go for 12 GB RAM might as well get 16 GB. definitely get the SSD, you'd be wasting your $$$ if you have a nice PC without a SSD.
Fry's... where they make you think you've gotten a good deal! 110 after tax for 80GB fry's ssd $1.38 $/GB 80 for 120gb with $10 mir .67 $/GB or .58 with mir Or two 120 newegg ssd's for 240GB and $140/160 three Fry's ssd's for 240GB for $330 We've all fallen prey to impulse an buy, but... smh
Sorry about that, lpbman, I meant to say it is $88 for 120GB SSD. I pay 118 here and then I get $30 m-I-b.
test the build before mounting to the case watch the newegg pc building tutorial, it's really nice learn how to install the OS from a thumbdrive if you're not planning on having a DVD player modular PSU(you'll thank me later)!!!! 700w psu is overkill for only 3.5ghz overclock imo, but not that important get a SSD, a good deal is something like $0.50/gb, go for intel SSD get a good case, A CASE CAN LAST YOU A LOOOOONG TIME AND THROUGH MANY BUILDS, dont cheap out on this what else? i'll add to it later
This is just over $1500. If you want to go around $1500 you will have to go with the Intel Core i7-2600K Quad-Core and LGA1155 motherboard. YOu can still go with the the Intel Core i7-3930K but you will have to sacrifice alot of stuff to keep it around $1500. You will have to find the cheapest motherboard(pretty sure even the cheapest motherboard should have USB3), get rid of SSD, find the cheapest PSU(would not recommend since a good PSU is very important), find the cheapest case(if USB3 front panel is not important to you), use stock CPU cooling. Or else you can still get the good use parts through other means such as craiglist for way cheaper. - don't go to Frys, stick with Newegg, Tigerdirect, Amazon - make sure you're in a electrostatic-free environment... so important when touching stuff (just get naked and build it on hardwood) - make sure your MB fits what you want in your CPU/GPU. If you want Sandybridge, make sure your MB supports it etc. - if ample pressure isn't making stuff fit into sockets, then check again you got the right socket (same goes for sex) don't force it in. - you don't need 700w unless you're going like triple GPU setup. honestly 350w is enough, especially nowadays and with SSD. - i'd say since it's your first time, save yourself hassle and just follow a good guide/setup out there on the net. Virgin builders always panic during building and BIOS hiccups or buy a slightly incompatible part.
The one big Gotcha is don't go to Fry's to buy parts. But I guess we are too late because you are on a mission. Sounds like you already bought everything...oh well.
Don't get any random video card with 1gb of RAM. A lot of third party video card makers bolt on extra ram to other crappy/budget video cards to entice people. Make sure it's one of the middle or upper tier product lines. Like what said, don't cheap out on the mobo or PSU. Cheap ones can lead to non-specific performances issues or just crap out early. Also get a decent case if you plan to move around a lot or upgrade.
Since it seems this is a done deal, I'd like to reiterate that monitor I posted is awesome. 27" 2560 x 1440 IPS $310 shipped
Yeap. Should have asked before. I'll learn "the hard way" if something goes awry this time. The best laid plans of mice and men... Also, I don't have that much money for a monitor. Update later!
just viewed a little bit of those vids. very nicely done, i'll def use those whenever i look to build my own PC which will prob be the next build, whenever that may be.
swoly, aren't you in IT? if so, it's sacrilege you haven't build a pc before... and above all else, you went to frys... they don't even price match SHAME ON YOU SON
