Brent Barry was a very very good player that people on this board seem to be underrating. Budinger would have to improve a ton to get to Barry's level and while he's got the skillset to do so, he hasn't proven anything yet to me. Get a season under his belt with 3pt% over 40 and then we'll start talking.

I think Bud is a starter for a average team and a first of the bench super sub on a contender.

brent barry's clipper years were sadly wasted. that white guy was a beast on the clippers and was more than just a spot up shooter. his clipper highlights looked like a downgraded version of pete marivich that can dunk.

Barry was a better ball handler than Bud, at least from what we have seen to date.

But it is hard to compare a guy who has completed his career to one that is just starting it....inevitably you compare things the other did in their prime to what Chase is doing in only his rookie year.

Tough to limit yourself to just their rookie years, for an apples to apples comparison.

He physically has all the tools to be something special, from his ball handling to his crazy athleticism(38.5 inch vertical). But when it comes to Budinger ceiling, I think it comes down to opportunity, which will only come through his improvement on the defensive end.

If he can develop that scorer's mentality and create his own shot, yes. But most of his points come off passes and screens. He reminds me a lot of Kevin Martin without the foul drawing.

It doesnt matter how many coaches you have, either you have that mentality or you don't. Its still early and alot of that comes with playing time and confidence, but from college and early pro, he doesn't have it. Kinda like mike miller and guys like that. Its not to say he can't be a good player, because to me , he's already a better player than shane and we're wasting time with him. I just think he will be what I think he will be and will be pleasantly suprised if he's anything more.

I think he has some of it, but he is definitly not an ALPHA dog type of player, at least from what I have seen.

    AB however, is...

BTW- Hornacek had major dawg in him.....

Budinger's ceiling is between Jason Richardson and Glen Rice

    He's nothing like Brent Barry.

He's going to be a role player. No, he doesn't have the skill set to be an All Star unless you base your analysis on youtube videos. He has poor lateral quickness, below average handles and strength for a SF. He also has a sweet jumper, good ability to finish on the break and above average court vision for a SF.

He was a steal in the draft.

He's being comared to Brent Barry just because he's white, can shoot 3's lights out, and can dunk. But Chase has much different game than Barry. Mike Miller is a better comparison but Chase still has alot more athelicism than Miller. Chase's game and athleticism reminds me more of Reggie Miller or maybe Jason Richardson because of the elevation around the rim that Miller did not have.

There is no question that Chase would be at least a 20ppg scorer if he was able to start and was featured in the offense. The only thing that is keeping him out of the starting lineup is defense. Bud is more of a 2 guard in my opinion, but Martin is better than Chase offensively so he will never crack that position in the starting lineup with Martin in Houston.

This thread is laced with references to Bud being a "role player." That is such an overworked term. EVERY player on a team has a "role" to play which makes them all "role players."

Bud could progress to "superstar" status, but more than likely, barring injury, he will be key player wherever he plays. Personally, I hope he retires a Rocket because he is fun to watch -- not perfect but fun -- and that's why I love baseketball.

Okay, that's my rant against the "role player" cliche. :)

I used to really like watching hornacek play from philly,to phoenix to utah. The guy seemed like he never missed and in philly, he ran the point also. He cancelled clyde out in 97 and thats why we lost that series.

My solution that i posted in anothe thread was trade shane and martin for iggy and fillers. Iggy and chase at the 2/3 and lee backig them both. Against certain big 3's, jeffries can be used to defend those guys. Chase can play martin's role and iggy would be the ultimate other wing because he can do it all.

He'll be a star player once after knows how to put the ball on the floor and create his own shots with crossover or what.

Chase is overrated. I think people who think he is an allstar in the making are crazy. He scores his points off picks and other players creating for him. I think he has the talent, but upstairs he does not have that aggressive nature. I think his potential is a poor man Joe Johnson who I think is overrated as well. I could be wrong though, he started last year in Battier's absence and seemed to be putting up 15-18 points every night as a rookie.

I would not be against trading Shane etc...and I like Iggy, but I would rather keep Martin at the 2 due to his efficiency, I would trade Shane and Lee for Iggy, and have the three headed monster at the wing position of:

    Iggy
    Martin
    CBud

That to me would be massively better than what we have now.

You have a defensive player who can also get to the rim and score in Iggy.

You have an offensively efficient player in KMart

And you have a guy who is a jack of all trades and a 3pt bomber in Bud..

Very flexible if you ask me.

Yeah, I know it is not realistic in any way, unless they are looking for cap relief.
