Can I ask a dumb question? I see this with Broncos "fans" all the time, and I've never understood it. Who cares if the national media doesn't pay attention to your team? Who cares if they don't get the "respect" you think they deserve? Answer me these questions: * Did the Rockets win the championship? Yes. * Did Hakeem just destroy everyone on his path to this championship? Yes. * Is there any intelligent fan who doesn't have Hakeem in the top 10 players of all time? No. * Do you have a t-shirt/hat/banner celebrating said championship? Yes. Then enjoy it! I see Broncos fans whine all the time about how "no one respects how great the 1998 Broncos were". WHO CARES? I remember the Super Bowl. I remember how fun the season was. Does your life honestly revolve around what a bunch of dickheads at ESPN think? And the tone took a nasty turn there at the end, but I promise you that wasn't directed at you guys. It was sent through ESP to the idiots at the Mile High Report. But my question does stand -- why do you guys care what ESPN thinks?
I forgot how much Costas was milking it on tv making it seem like it was the worst American tragedy since Pearl Harbor
This is kind of surreal, I was only 10 years old before all this was happening. Didn't really pay attention to all the details.
The end right before the commercial reminded me of Metal Gear Solid but instead of screaming SNAAAAKE before staticing out, it was Juice! JUICE! JUUUUUUUICE!
I still resented that whole crap for taking away the spotlight from the Rockets. I hope OJ is getting butt raped right now in prison.
Probably because that was Game 5 which the Knicks won, putting them a win away from the title. Combine that with the Rangers and the Cup and that was what the story was on that date. It didn't really become about Hakeem and the Rockets until they came back and won the series in Houston.
I was 14. I wasn't into football yet and I only knew of OJ from the Naked Gun movies. I was a huge Rockets fan and didn't care about anything else that happened that day. I remember seeing some of this footage (like the end) but not a lot of it.
No, our life does not revolve around the pe**s-heads at ESPN, but unfortunately, many take what the media portray to heart as the gospel truth. Believe us, there are many, many individuals who believe that Jordan did not play at all in 1995, or that Olajuwon never made it to the Finals until 1986, etc. We get the same individuals' careers documented over and over again- Bird, Magic, Jordan, LeBron, even people like Isiah and Ewing get more media time than Olajuwon. So, we on this board all know what they did and how they should be properly remembered- we clearly understand that. At the same time, if we see something that we perceive as unfair, we're going to say something about it. We're a bunch that doesn't take this lying down- until the very last breath expires from our lifeless bodies, we will stand up for the Rockets' proper role in NBA history and its right to be given reasonably equal media time. And I'm not sure about the Broncos analogy- certainly John Elway was one of the most recognized figures in football, and the fact that they won back-to-back titles in football certainly put them in an elite category. Since when is John Elway not mentioned among the top 5-10 quarterbacks of all time? He, by himself, has received a great deal more publicity than Olajuwon. And we're not saying put HO above Jordan or Bird or Magic. We're just saying- give the man his due. Stop saying the Rockets "lucked" into 2 championships. Give the achievement the recognition it deserves. Hakeem's story, coming from Nigeria, Phi Slama Jama, the Twin Towers, the "fake injury," the 2 championships, the Big 3, is just as compelling as any in basketball- so give the man equal time, that's all we ask.
I understand the equal time argument thing I guess, but I think the problem is I'm not one of those people who gets upset over stuff like the NFL Network's "Top 10" shows. I just think that if you know that Hakeem is one of the GOAT and you have a championship, what does it matter what everyone else thinks? Good lord, if the Nuggets had won it all last year I wouldn't care if people said they were the worst championship team ever. I would just point to the word "champions" on the shirt/banner/hat and ignore the rest.
