Yes, better known in CHINA. When did a particularly densely populated country = World?

Better known in Europe - Mike
Better known in North America - Mike
Better known in Africa - Mike
Better known in Australia - Mike
Better known in Asia outside of China - Mike
Better known in South America - Mike

Hell, Jackie Chan is more well known today than Bruce Lee. I wish I was making this up.

    In retrospect, this thread sucks.

Should have been MJ vs. Elvis or the Beetles or Pele.

I actually met a man from Togo (Africa) to knew who Bruce Lee was and not Michael Jackson.

Yeah it's funny someone mentioned the Chinese population. Man that's a billion more people than Americans. So if you add all those Asiann countries where his movies were distributed, then that would be like a good 4 billion people who know who Bruce Lee is! Also, he was born about 2 decades before Michael Jackson, which means he touched a generation older than Jackson did. And these people are still living.

Do you think older Asians listen to Jackson's music? Or American music in general? I'm not saying American music sucks, but I'm saying from what I know, Asians, especially the older fobby ones, do not listen to American music. And that is in U.S. So Asians living in Asia will be even less likely to listen to American music. But they do enjoy watching Chinese movies. It's crazy how many Asians watch those Chinese movies. You can ask any older Asian about some character from a famous Chinese movie and he'll likely know what you're talking about.

I talk about Asians because Asians make up most of the world's population.

You guys are seriously laughable. Asians don't listen to American music? Let me give you some examples of Jackson's range over that continent.

The Philippines prison dance video has gotten tons of coverage.

Did you know that Hindus in India are calling on the government to honor Jackson with a stamp? Why? Because he was treated like a God whenever he was there. http://www.contactmusic.com/news.nsf/article/hindus-call-for-jackson-stamp_1108059 That's another billion people for you too by the way.

Chinese people are mourning him as well calling his music the soundtrack of their nation and others still know him for his weirdness. http://www.channelnewsasia.com/stories/afp_asiapacific/view/438641/1/.html His death topped headlines in China as well. http://www.themalaysianinsider.com/...ichael-jacksons-death-tops-headlines-in-china

Singapore had multiple gatherings honoring him. http://sg.news.yahoo.com/xin/20090630/ten-400-350-fans-gather-mourn-michael-ja-3c1b9bc.html

    http://ph.news.yahoo.com/cna/20090629/tap-047-some-100-fans-turn-michael-jacks-231650b.html

Japan is another nation who knew Michael well. http://rokdrop.com/2009/06/27/michael-jacksons-death-big-news-in-japan/

Do you really want me to keep going?

I don't think you can compare these two. As of right now I would say MJ is bigger but I'm biased since I'm from the US, grew up during his times and MJ just died. Gotta remember: Bruce died 30 years ago (I wasn't born) and MJ just died a few days ago!

Also with the new media, news comes in waves that is 100x bigger than 30 years ago. I think with Bruce, his legend grew bigger and bigger AFTER his death where we have to wait awhile to see if the same effect will happen to MJ.

MJ has a lot of peers such as Madonna, Beatles, Elvis who will be remembered as great or even more than MJ. Bruce 30 years after his death, I still can't imagine anyone surpassing his legend.

A better question would be, in 500 years would the general population remember them? How about in 1000 years?

    600,000,000 for MJ
    2 for Bruce Lee

    No comparison. :D

First of all, I never said Bruce Lee was as famous as MJ.

What I'm trying to point out was that, THE ENTIRE WORLD outside of China/Asia, had no CLUE as to what Martial Arts was. When Enter the Dragon came out (One of his only films that was available to the USA... and his only movie filmed in english), it had the same MASS global appeal that MJ's music had. Martial Arts schools began opening all across the US and around the world. EVERYONE was trying to copy Bruce Lee's moves.

You bring up the point about Tucker singing Michael Jackson in a Jackie Chan movie... but you could say the exact same thing about the Martial Arts. How many times do we see Hollywood films, utilize Martial Arts in their movies? Or mimic the mannerisms of Bruce Lee? Jackie Chan wouldn't even be a movie star if it weren't for Bruce Lee.

Bruce Lee had 10 years to make his impact, MJ had pretty much his entire life. IF Bruce Lee had lived a little longer, I truly believe his name would be right up there with MJ, Elvis and Ali... considering the profound impact his ONE movie had.... but this is just MY OPINION.

and it was already pointed out... but Bruce Lee was a master Philosopher, who's teachings could be applied to any aspect of life.

Not sure you could say the same about MJ.

I just want to say that Bruce Lee may not be that popular in Mainland China as you thought. Just think about this...Bruce Lee's era is in the 70s and our motherland was suffering from Cultural Revolution during that period of time. No one cares about a Hong Kong movie star at that time.

I agree to another poster here. Let's ask the question again several decades later.

Then why don't you change your misleading thread and title and everything else on here to:

Who is most famous in China or Asia? Bruce lee or Michael Jackson?

I, along with most casual fans of music, film, and pop culture, have no clue what that philosophy is. I think you are overrating his impact on the world.

he only cares what asians who watch chinese movies think, not the rest of the world. so if you are not asian and don't watch chinese movies, then your vote is not valid.

I mean, you know people watch chinese movies more than they listen to music right? I'm like the only person in the world who listens to music more than watch chinese movies. Let's say I watch 1 chinese movie a week, well I listen to maybe 200-300 songs a week on my ipod or on the radio.
and what about music videos? and some to that.

    crazy

Why are people bringing up Bruce Lee's philosophy? How many people in the world can recite a single Bruce Lee quote? How many people in the world (even non-English speakers) can sing the all the lyrics to at least one Michael Jackson song. We're talking about who's more well known, not 'who's the deeper philosopher.'
