they might be trying to point the car in the right direction...but until they bring in a real difference maker (or 2) they're spinning their wheels. i just don't see that happening in the next few weeks.

That's one of the reasons not to extend a player too early. You're trying to get the best performance out of your players, and having them play for a contract is one way to get that.

As for shopping players, didn't you say you would trade anyone without regrets if it upgrades the team? We haven't heard anything specific as far as who the Rockets are shopping, all we know is that they're looking to make a trade. Which is good, because this team needs to be upgraded. I thought that's something everyone pretty much agreed on.

I disagree with the premise that Brooks' frustration on the court is because he doesn't have a contract extension. He's said he's obviously unhappy with the Rockets' position, but understands why they do it. It wouldn't be a problem anyway if he was playing well. I think he's frustrated because he's not playing well. That's all. Besides, would we be happy if Brooks did get a fat extension, was playing poorly now, and was not frustrated about it because his money was guaranteed?

Moreover, I think Morey and Adelman would like nothing better but for Brooks to get back to playing as well as he had been, regardless of what it does to his contract value. Brooks is one of Morey's best trade chips and he isn't doing Morey many favors by not playing well. If he wants to convince Denver to send Carmelo Anthony to Houston, he needs Brooks to be a bad-ass. If nothing materializes there and Brooks market value in the offseason is higher than his utility, Morey can still get some value from his Bird rights by signing-and-trading Brooks to his new home.

Durvasa, i dont thinks its about giving the contract too early as opposed to the price of the contract. Football is the ultimate team game and those guys are on a year to year contract, but at the same time a selfishness also takes hold when playing for that next contract. In a sport like basketball, i think the guaranteed contracts helps chemistry and stability. In basketball, 1 or 2 players making 1 or 2 plays a game make a huge difference. In football, the qb is the most important because he touches the ball every play, but, its truly about the others doing their jobs in sequence.

I think only half the contracts should be guaranteed. That way when players get injured or just plain suck after a big contract, the team won't be penalizad for so long. Redd,Yao,Tracy,Bynum, and guys that that with huge deals and injured really hurt their teams big time.

I think its a combination of financial uncertainty, getting injured and losing his starting job, not playing well and maybe frustration over not being completely healed yet. Plus, the Rockets are out of the playoff picture, and making noise in the playoffs is another way to market yourself to other teams.

Under the circumstances, its totally understandable why he'd be unhappy.

If by that you mean Brooks not being able to cope with reality and causing chemistry problems than you are correct, if not than you are wrong. Morey may be a low-baller, but he sure isn’t lowballing Brooks right now, he is just giving him conventional NBA business treatment.

Show me one time Morey’s contract negotiation strategies have backfired on him. The only mistake I can think of is not getting extra non-garanteed years out of Landry’s rookie contract, a slip-up that didn’t even backfire on him and he has corrected with subsequent contracts.

Imagine the heat Morey would be taking from a lot of folks in here if he extended Brooks and got the performance we’re seeing now out of him, if anything Brooks is giving Morey more justification for his policy.

I think you are over-dramatizing it, it’s not like AB is on the brink of losing his security; he will have a job, he will get paid, he will get a raise and that depends on how well he plays this year. If he is in fact affected by being in a contract year, here is a list of saps who sure coped the hell better than him:

    From Hoopsworld:
Unreliable source taken for illustration only.
    ---

In all of sports, Contract year historically has been more favorable to players. If a player can't cope with that and adopt the glass half-full approach, then it's his fault and loss.

Landry's in a different situation, Brooks hasn't had to adapt to a new system, a deeper roation and development of younger players being more important than establishing the best role for Landry. I hope Brooks will be thriving by the end of the season (if he still here) that's what he is supposed to do.

I think AB has moved on from not getting the extension, I think the major source of his frustration is simply not having as good as or a better year than the last,up until now for understandable circumstances, from now on is up to him to make the most of his time.

It's very hard for us to make comments on what is going on behind the closed doors. I don't care what's going on, what's best for Brooks stays same and that is to play his best.

May be DM is trying to lower his value: In that case, Brooks need to make the most out of limited minutes.

May be Brooks know he is going to be trade soon: Again, He needs to play his best so if he gets traded while playing best, Morey will get boos. If he gets traded playing as he is now, it won't matter much

Even for future contract, his best is to play his best.

If he is frustrated about his starting lineup job, then again EARN it back.

There could be much more out there such as Landry got traded when he did so much for this team, and he was Brooks close friend. May be Brooks feel he did a lot for this team last year and he is scared that DM will trade him too because of a need or what.. aka Loyalty

So I just feel that Brooks still need to try his best no matter what's happening inside.

Personally, looking at Brooks getting frustration on little things before such as on refrees... I feel he just has no control over his frustration.. he is simply letting his own frustration hurt him. I don't feel sorry for him for such reasons.. as a professional, he needs to man up. I can understand all this impact him for few games, but he has to come over it already... He needs to understand he is hurting fans and his teammates.

i made a thread about "brooks feelings on lowry making more than him from the bench" or something like that, my specific point was that Brooks would underperform this year due to not getting extended. Not weather it was right or wrong, I just got a bunch of people ripping me saying brooks wouldn't be affected and he shouldn't be looking for an extension.

I side with morey, brooks needs to wait his turn, but my point has been proven, brooks is not playing well because of this issue. This was my concern from the start and people thought it was proposterous for some reason. Money is a big motivator but if brooks was smart, he would stop it with the attitude, play out his last year so that he can show he is worth the money he wants.

Oh, don't take it so bad, the internet can also fuel your delusions of grandeur so it kind of balances itself out. Now, go back to your shrink to calm you down.

You have no delusions you say? Well, you have not been listening to your shrink. The first step to rehab is to recognize that you are in denial, then you move on to the other steps towards your regaining your sanity.

You can also read about these rehab steps on manuals to help you out. You really need it, DD.

We have a non-extension policy imo mostly because we really haven't had any players worth extending. The possible costs of not extending and thus ending up paying more or getting less production are imo less than the possible costs of giving mediocre players lots of guaranteed money and then watch them turn into albatross contracts. I mean, didn't we learn anything from Carroll Dawson's mistakes?

As for Brooks, it's true that he doesn't have the financial security yet and that probably is in his mind somewhere affecing his play along with the other issues (injury, his backup playing better than him and stealing his spot etc.). Sucks for him.

What I fear (I guess Morey too) is that last season was the best form that Brooks was ever going to get into. We don't want to extend the guy at his value at his PEAK production (think Toronto Mike James) if he is going to revert back to normal. Looking at the MIP awards list. we'll see that many if not most players won it by playing the best ball of their whole career.

While I will admit it might be remotely similar it is still a giant leap of interpretation on your part.
