Lucas is really fast. But Brooks -- my goodness. I don't think I've ever seen a faster player with the ball.
And yet these small/fast guards you just mentioned happened to develop into MVP winners, and got plenty of playing time. Clearly, its possible for these type of players to make a name for themselves in the NBA.
Brooks is easily better than Lucas. Can Lucas do this. <object width="425" height="350"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/xqMoU4qxjLk"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/xqMoU4qxjLk" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="350"></embed></object> or this <object width="425" height="350"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/JOLngZFLRJ0"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/JOLngZFLRJ0" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="350"></embed></object>
I don't think Brook will be starting anytime soon. Whether next year, the year after that, nor the one after. I think Brooks will be a good backup one day at best like Bobby Jackson. Not so much with Lucas.
I have no idea if Brooks will be an all-star. But, I was a little bummed when we drafted him, although much more so when we took Landry. But, after hearing that Adelman had been watching him this last year, and handpicked him, then watching him be the best player in summer league, then invited to the Olympic training squad, and players like Jason Kidd say he's going to be someone very special in the NBA for a long time, I have to admit my opinion changed. I don't expect him to start anytime soon, but he could turn into a very interesting player, and I don't see that happening with JL3 ... as much as I like him, especially since he's John Lucas' kid.
Everyone will find out Brooks is the better player pretty quickly, when he makes the 15-man roster and JLIII gets sent packing.
In all aspects, Brooks is better than Lucas. I won't be surprised if Brooks will get more time than SF3.
Go back and watch their college games. In college, John Lucas was an excellent floor general and distributor. AB was the shoot-first ballhog. The fact is that in the NBA, where the average height is 2-3 inches taller than college, all little guys have trouble seeing the floor and making good passes. John Lucas's basketball IQ is still there, he just is too short to make good use of it. From a talent/tools standpoint, the only advantage AB has over John Lucas is the 40-foot range that he showed in summer league. If he can't find that, he's the same sort of marginal NBA player than Lucas is.
It's all good, I probably should have typed a little softer myself. You'll notice I picked out your post over several by rookies that said the same thing mainly because I respect you opinion on Bball. I hate the need to bash Lucas to make ourselves feel good about Brooks when Lucas has done and overcome a lot more that brooks where the NBA is concerned. I have no problem with Brooks and will admit he can do some things that Lucas can't but they ARE simular and both unfortunately are too small IMO to be successful at the highest levels of the NBA. As a Rockets fan I hope that all of you Brooks fanatics are right because drafting an Allen Iverson II where we did would be great especially since he seems to have his head attached a little more squarely than AI. IMO Brooks is NOT Allen Iverson II but here's hoping.
its not even close, this thread is stupid. brooks is a real player, a first round draft pick. he was one of the best players in the pac ten last season.
If you were going to go down to the gym or the park and play some pick-up ball, then it probably wouldn't matter much between JLIII and AB, because in an environment like that, Lucas' strengths translate as well as Brooks' do. However, in NBA games, whenever Lucas has received playing time, the offense definitely does not flow, he does not get his teammates involved well, and his shots usually (I say usually, sometimes he does fairly well) seem to be more out of desperation or an attempt to at least GET SOMETHING for himself while he is out there, rather than in the rhythm of an actual offense. Needless to say, this would not bode well if he were to get any significant playing time. The caveat, of course, is that all of that really occurred under JVG's regime, so his relatively poor performances could have had a lot to do with that. But he has played some in pre-season, and it really does not look any different to me than last year, where he is concerned. Also, we have yet to see Brooks in an NBA game, so no one really knows exactly how he will react, how he will fit. There are, though, more reasons to feel good about Brooks than about Lucas. Chief among them is the fact that professionals in various capacities have labeled Brooks as having superior talent and potentially an all-star caliber future. Our coach, our GM, and especially other big-time pro veterans such as Kidd and Kobe all have had nothing but praise for Brooks. Brooks was a first-rounder, and was going to be one, even if it had not been us who picked him. Now I know a fair bit about basketball, but I will readily defer to people such as that. No one of that caliber has said anything even remotely like that about Lucas. Our own GM has openly said 'We are trying to find some place else where he can play.' Honestly, I don't even see how this is even a topic of discussion anymore. Lucas is not going to be here, regardless. If they can't find a taker in a trade, he's just going to be cut. In a setting where the maximum level of play would be 'playground or high-end rec center' such as Fonde, then you would see similar performances out of both guys. But that's what people mean when they say that Brooks is on a whole different level. Put it another way - Brooks can do everything Lucas can do, but Lucas can't do everything Brooks can do. Lucas is gonzo.
I remember JL3 from college. NONE of his playmaking has translated to the NBA. That is what 2 summer leagues and 1 1/2 NBA seasons have proven. At this level, JL3 is only effective when he is scoring, otherwise he is death to an offense. AB, on the other hand, CLEARLY has better court vision in the NBA than JL3. It's not even close and it's barely debatable, IMO. I agree that if AB doesn't shoot well, his NBA future is questionable. However if he does shoot well, his upside leaves JL3 in the dust. Neither guy will ever defend well in the NBA. At least AB's superior positives give him a chance to be a productive rotation player in the league. I don't know if he'll ever be a starter because he's so small.
I didn't realize they had similar stats in college. Doesn't matter now, because the more worthy comparison is how they've done in the NBA. AB > Lucas in summer league historically. If you just watch them, AB looks better then Lucas in every aspect. Despite his size, he's got the toughness to finish. Reminds me of Daniel Gibson in the playoffs. Of course he's got to prove it over the course of a season though (actually Gibson has yet to prove it too).
Brooks being drafted in the first round does not mean that he is better than Lucas. That logic just doesn't make sense. Yes... Brooks seems like he has the ability to be a good point guard. But he doesn't come out of college with any more hype that Lucas did. Most draft experts considered Brooks a reach by the ROX. From the sporting news (http://www.product-reviews.net/2007/06/29/2007-nba-draft-grades/) 26. Houston - Aaron Brooks. The Rockets have acquired Mike James to run the show and Brooks could provide some scoring punch off of the bench. Still, it’s hard to get excited about this selection. Grade: C From Rivals.com (http://collegebasketball.rivals.com/content.asp?CID=687866) Draft Grade: D First off, this pick reeks of a trade because it obviously makes very little sense. The Rockets have three capable point guards on their roster already in Rafer Alston, Mike James and John Lucas, so it's not quite clear where Brooks fits. If the Rockets end up trading this pick on July 15 (maybe to Sacramento in a package for Ron Artest?), then ignore this grade and analysis altogether. If they took Brooks with the intention of keeping him, though, then we're pretty stumped. Brooks is a player who clearly could have been had in the second round. He also doesn't fill any kind of need for a team that has to win right now. The Rockets don't have any power forwards on their roster at the moment (Chuck Hayes is a free agent), and there were a few players here that could have had value at this slot. Nick Fazekas, Josh McRoberts, Glen Davis, and especially Tiago Splitter come to mind. When Splitter comes over to San Antonio next year and starts contributing big minutes right away, people in Houston will be upset for passing on him. From ESPN (http://insider.espn.go.com/nbadraft/draft/tracker/team?team=hou) Brooks is the first real surprise of the draft. He has great quickness and can score the ball, but he is undersized and plays out of control at times. More importantly, how does he fit in Houston? With Mike James, Rafer Alston and Luther Head on the roster, Brooks will be stuck at the end of the bench. From Chad Ford (http://insider.espn.go.com/nba/draft2007/insider/columns/story?columnist=ford_chad&page=draftgrades) Grade: D+ Round 1: Aaron Brooks (26) Analysis: New Houston GM Daryl Morey might be the resident Rocket scientist, but I don't get this draft. Brooks is an undersized point guard who's really more of a 2-guard in the Earl Boykins mode. Again... my point isn't to slam Brooks. I just don't seem him or Lucas contributing anything to this team. They are too similar and share the same weaknesses.
I agree with the posters that say this thread is pointless but only based on the fact that Lucas will be gone soon. Brooks will be kept over Lucas because he was a 1st round pick this season and teams don't like to cut a 1st rounder. Lucas will be cut because we have 4 other point guards on the roster and we also have 19 players. It's really too bad for both of them that the rockets picked up SF3 and Mike James because they both need a roster and some time to contribute. Lucas getting cut may be the best thing for him if he finds another roster but AB is stuck at the end of the bench with 3 veterans in front of him and little hope for PT.
Ridiculous argument. If the Rockets hadn't picked Brooks, he wouldn't have been a first-round draft pick. Three years ago, Lucas was one of the best players in the Big 12. They picked AB because Adelman lived in Oregon and got to watch him play. There is no question in my mind that had Adelman lived in Louisiana, the Rockets would have picked Big Baby.
Thanks okierock, peace reigns.Good deal. You know it's kinda weird because I grew up in Bellaire so I always want to see those guys do well.I know it didn't come across in my previous posts but I admire JL3.He seems to be an overachiever. It's gotta be tough growing up in that shadow with even the remotest expectations/comparisons to Daddy. With regard to Aaron it's obviously early and we'll see.Like I said I had the pleasure of seeing quite a bit of him in college and the reports by everyone since seem to glow. We all want the same thing so hopefully Brooks will be that great point guard we haven't had in forever.
