Why is this in the debate and discussion...Wasn't there a thread on this in the Hangout...It's just a movie about gay cowboy love, big deal...

Anyway, haven't seen it, and don't plan to see it...My g/f has and she said it was ok...She felt a little uncomfortable with the guy on guy love scenes, but overall, an average movie not worth the hype...

Saw it- fantastic acting by both of the leads. Great direction. Veeery slow. The above post about the movie being very real vs. dramatic is accurate. This movie is being nominated for awards and winning awards because it merits it. I think the director specifically avoided the political side of the story (it's tragic that their love is forbidden by society) in favor of the personal day to day, year to year story of being apart and together.

This is really all it boils down to. ^

It's a good movie. If you aren't interested in it then don't see it. If you don't see it, you can add nothing to the discussion.

    There's many a strange impulse out on the plains of West Texas;
There's many a young boy who feels things he don't comprehend.
Well small town don't like it when somebody falls between sexes,
No, small town don't like it when a cowboy has feelings for men.

Well I believe in my soul that inside every man there's a feminine,
And inside every lady there's a deep manly voice loud and clear.
Well, a cowboy may brag about things that he does with his women,
But the ones who brag loudest are the ones that are most likely queer.

Cowboys are frequently secretly fond of each other
What did you think those saddles and boots was about?
There's many a cowboy who don't understand the way that he feels towards his brother, Inside every cowboy there's a lady who'd love to slip out.

Ten men for each woman was the rule way back when on the prairie,
And somehow those cowboys must have kept themselves warm late at night.
Cowboys are famous for getting riled up about fairies,
But I'll tell you the reason a big strong man gets so uptight:

Cowboys are frequently secretly fond of each other
That's why they wear leather, and Levi's and belts buckled tight.
There's many a cowboy who don't understand the way that he feels towards his brother; There's many a cowboy who's more like a lady at night.

Well there's always somebody who says what the others just whisper,
And mostly that someone's the first one to get shot down dead:
When you talk to a cowboy don't treat him like he was a sister
Don't mess with the lady that's sleepin' in each cowboy's head.

Cowboys are frequently secretly fond of each other
    Even though they talk

I'm sorry -- this is so true. It is a completely slow and dull movie, as in there is no dramatic tension. As if everyone in the audience doesn't know what's going to happen. Seriously, it's like a Meryl Streep movie but without her.

The Proulx short story is amazing b/c when you read it, it's like the last story in an amazing collection of intense and gorgeous frontier storytelling. Then you're in the middle of that last story and you're all like "no he did NOT" Then you're all like "would spit really work? could you really still saddle up the next morning?"

The reason all of you should see the movie, (even those of you who think gays should be cured in government de-gaying concentration camps), is that Jake Giglyynhahl, by the end of the movie, grows a really fake-looking 'stache and mullet, so much so that Mrs. B-Bob is all like "Hey this is Ben Stiller all over again from that dumb dodgeball movie you made me watch."

And she, as usual, is so right. Dodgeball is the better film, and Ang Lee jumped the shark big time when he made the Hulk (another overtly political movie about manly gay men, but the green kind).

PS -- Read the Annie P story B4 you see the movie. Seriously.
PPS -- the cinematography is great. Jake G's acting is pretty good, IMHO.
PPPS -- why is Heath L so great? He just does this lizard-lipped cowboy routine for two hours. It's seriously almost a parody of someone acting like a cowboy. Weird.

The part that's pissing me off is that my name is Jim.

Apparently one of the character's names is Jim.

So, all weekend, I had two of my buddies keep saying "why can't I quit you, Jim?"

This is going to be annoying.

There's no Jim. It's Jack and Enis.

Well, that's good to know. It still doesn't explain why they kept saying it, though.

    Hand in glove
The sun shines out of our behinds
No, it’s not like any other love
This one is different - because it’s us

    Hand in glove
We can go wherever we please
    And everything depends upon
How near you stand to me

    And if the people stare
    Then the people stare
Oh, I really don’t know and I really don’t care

Kiss my shades ... oh ...

    Hand in glove
    The good people laugh
Yes, we may be hidden by rags
But we’ve something they never have

    Hand in glove
The sun shines out of our behinds
Yes, we may be hidden by rags
But we’ve something they never have

    And if the people stare
    Then the people stare
Oh, I really don’t know and I really don’t care

Kiss my shades ... oh ...

So, hand in glove I stake my claim
I’ll fight to the last breath

If they dare touch a hair on your head
I’ll fight to the last breath

For the good life is out there somewhere
So stay on my arm, you little charmer

But I know my luck too well
Yes, I know my luck too well
And I’ll probably never see you again
I’ll probably never see you again
I’ll probably never see you again
    Oh ...

Mrs. Giddyup and I saw the movie last night. We both thought the movie was worth the price of admission. It was a sad story-- that people would go to such extraordinary lengths to cope and find happiness.

We came home and played cowboy/cowgirl... :D
