When Sheryl Crow starts doing advertisements and commercials, is on the cover of magazines at least every other month, and gets massive TV and radio play then I'll consider her a big time female artist. Sheryl doesn't have the popularity of Britney.
ok,...your right.......Sheryl Crow is more my personal taste per se, so how about... Alanis Morresette? did Britney break her record for album sales for jagged little pill? i don't think so, Alanis second album did not fare so well, but neither did Madonna True Blue album upon initial release. Alanis may not be as cute as Brit,....but she's got more to say in one song than miss spears in two albums worth.....again this is just my opinion....but that's my thoughts
you are exactly right........but the crux of the debate is where her popularity lies in 12 to 14 year olds whom historicly turn on their idols after age 18. Madonna successfully maintain her audience and made it grow beyond just kids to young adults to adults. please make note that i am not dising the girl........i do wish her well.......i'm just not buying into the hype. popularity is fleeting from year to year....clout is earned through body of work ( substance of material ) i'm just saying that i don't see the substance in her current material to back up the Madonna claims.
OK well Jagged Little Pill (which I got when my sister was about to throw it away) is the 3rd biggest female album of all time so no shame in losing to it by 3x platinum (13x platinum ain't too shabby) and considering how old it is Alanis obviously holds little of the mass appeal she once had. Also, Britney did shatter Alanis' first week record for a female when she sold 1.3 million of OIDIA compared to 456,000 of Former Infatuated Junkie (dammit I know I'm missing a word and the order). Also, maybe I'm wrong, but isn't True Blue 7x platinum, although maybe that was after a slow initial release like you said, and Former Infatuated Junkie (?) is not anywhere near that. But we do agree that Britney is the cuter of the two.
OK well maybe you're trying to compare Britney to the Madonna we know now. But compare their early careers and the similarity is there. They both have 2 full albums out (not counting Britney's new one). The 5 songs I know are from Madonna's first 2 are Holiday, Lucky Star, Borderline, Like a Virgin, and Material Girl (my favorite). Now compare the "substance" of those to Britney's current body of work and tell me they aren't very similar. I'm not saying Britney is at Madonna's level, just saying she is trodding an oh so familiar path. She's even already had her signature VMA performance a la Like a Virgin with her OIDIA performance.
i agree completely.........wheather she can follow it up is my only question......imho........i don't think so.
Dawg, why you gotta keep disagreeing with me? No problem, you've got your opinion, I've got mine, they probably won't change anytime soon. Nice discussion though. See that's why I love this board, you can have a civilized discussion without namecalling or any of that other stuff.
nice chat.....i enjoyed it too.....thanks for respecting my opinions....i respect yours...... now back to the celebrity nude site of Britney
When I went to bed last night there was only one post in this thread, and then I wake up and it's like WOW! I used to like the music of Britney Spears, and I used to be ashamed to tell people that because I'm 28 and not some teeny-bopper. However, Max Martin, Andreas Carlson, and Kristin Lundin always did a good job of writing "catchy" bubblegum pop songs for her. I still have the first 2 CDs...I just don't listen to them anymore. Thankfully, I was introduced to Moby and later Radiohead, and now top 40 artists are ones that I never listen to anymore. I want to hear music that will challenge me like Moby, Radiohead, Aphex Twin, and Nine Inch Nails (just to name a few). Britney has talent and she is very hot, but I'm sorta tired of this image she plays of how she is such an innocent and a virgin but she dresses like "a slut". I think it was VH-1 that had a special on sex in music and some writer for Rolling Stone or something like that said that Britney would have to see a shrink if she continued with this angle of "I'm pure and innocent" but "I hardly have any clothes on right now" routine. It's like she is sending out a mixed message, and I can see why people who have small kids that like her would be up in arms over her.
Thanks guys, I had a fun video to watch this morning. The music wasn't that great and it was pretty lame until the second half, but the second half definately turns up the heat. Anyways, it was worth the download since I don't watch MTV anymore. B
I don't really care for people bashig Britney. To me she is another manufactured boy/girl product in the music industry which is definitely nearing it's end. She has no real singing talent and doesn't compare to a Madonna, Whitney, Mariah, etc. She has made her entire career of her looks, controversy and media hype. Whenever MTV has a whole damn day dedicated to you and your upcoming album then your going to sell records. Her very first video had her dancing around half-dressed in school girl clothes and we all know about her public performances, all show, all lip-sync. Simply put: she has no singing ability but she has the look.
Pop music goes through cycles of popularity, but I'd have to disagree with you here. I wouldn't mind seeing the other pop products shut down although I think N'Sync, Backstreet Boys, Christina, and Britney will survive the cycle. Madonna, Whitney, and Mariah have been around for a long time. Britney's career only started 3 years ago. I'd give her more time to reach that status. Her Las Vegas HBO special will be on Sunday night so you can judge for yourself.
Sadly, I agree with Smokey. I don't think the end of boy/girl bands is in sight. Unless Lou Pearlman is assassinated or banished from the U.S., I think we'll be hearing more teeny-bop crap on the radio and on TRL for the forseeable future. Death to all boy bands!! Britney should be seen and not heard. Christina should be heard but not seen (well, I think she's hot, but others think she's a total skank). If we combined the two, we'd have a MegaSuperSingerSlut called Britina. If we could also get Madonna to write music for this Britina, we might just have something... Has anyone noticed that if you go to Britney's official site, her name is spelled both Brittany and Britney? Seems that in addition to the wavering slut/innocent image, she's also confused about how to spell her own name.
We'll if they do stick around they have obviously reached their peak since they are all selling less albums now than before. OK, my point here was that Britney cannot sing, she will never compare to the ladies mentioned above no matter what length of time she is given. Simply put she cannot sing, if you think she can you're blinded by her looks. I don't have to wait for the L.V. show because I can judge by her past two VMA performances. 2000: A strip down to a skin-toned suit. 2001: A cheesy copy of Aaliyah's "We Need a Resolution" with all the snakes and animals and she was showing lots of skin again. And yes she lip-synced both times. I don't care for her showing all the skin and stuff because as I always have said if you have it then flaunt it. It just bugs me when people think she's a real talent because she's not. She has no real voice, like I said before it's all look and hype.
RM95, I'm sure you've seen the trailer for Crossroads. What do you think? To me it appears to be another cheesy MTV produced chick movie that doesn't deserve to be in theaters. If you guys haven't seen the trailer, it can be found here.
Well I don't go to that site but I've been to others and have never seen Brittany in any official thing. Hell, it was probably a topic about all the people who still think it's Brittany instead of Britney, as there are many of them out there. Although back when she was starting there was the matter of no one knowing if her middle name was Jeau or Jean but that was finally cleared up to be Jean. So two down and one to go on the misspelled names. We'll if they do stick around they have obviously reached their peak since they are all selling less albums now than before While I would agree this is true, I would say it would be hard to find artists who don't peak in sales earlier in their careers and certainly when you start off at 14x, 13x, and 10x platinum for BSB, Britney, and Nsync respectively it's hard to go anywhere but down. Another thing to consider is the huge effect the economy going bad has had. Apparently this will be the worst year ever for sales in that total dollar sales will drop 10% from the previous year and it seems album sales have been down around 15% or so. Relative to everyone else, BSB/Britney/Nsync still are at the top of the heap with the occasional album (Enya right now) doing similar sales to them.
On Brit, she has the talent. 'Stronger' was a terrific song for age 20. She's had a few hits already. She's going to be ok. Maybe bigger than Madonna. Every woman should aspire to be blonde, big chested, and in great shape. Isn't that what it's all about? On the Boy bands, there are a great deal of boy bands who never make it. These kids put in their time to get to this point. They had to learn a great deal. So what if somebody taught them. It doesn't matter, they learned. Aerosmith had nothing but praise for N sync. They went on to say that these kids were much further along vocally than anyone. And that's coming from a very different perspective. Steven Tyler does seem to know what he's talking about musically. I trust his opinion.
