Hey, I should venture into the hangout more than once every year. Another recent comedy, every bit as funny as the Office was Phoenix Nights. If you can find either series on DVD anywhere I thoroughly recommend it.
I have yet to see anything British that's made me laugh. I came close one time where these two chicks were running around filming each other doing stupid things to other people...don't remember the name of the show.
Newer comedies that are on BBC America: Dead Ringers- (blows SNL right out of the water) Thin Blue Line- (Rowan Atkinson-Black Adder, Mr. Bean) this show is hilarious. My Hero- Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No - it's health-food store owner, George Sunday (Ardal O'Hanlon, Father Ted), also known as the world's most famous superhero, Thermoman. Not being very familar with Earth's customs, Thermoman is often embarassingly honest and tends to take everything too literally.
Friends has a few laughs ... Still Standing has a few laughs. Will & Grace not so much. Seinfeld has a ton of laughs.
Will check it out. On the flip, I highly, highly recommend People Like Us. Unbelievably funny, once you get used to the rythm ( it's mockumentary interviews; one person a week.)
Sorry, couldn't resist. Although I never saw it, I heard some people loved AbFab, and it was yet another disastrous US translation. But, Freak, seriously, you don't find Monty Python funny?
You know the best thing British shows have going for them is the great accents, which make funny things funnier and serious things more somber... (Disclaimer: This has been a tongue and cheek post, but sadly accurately reflects much of American perception)
I really don't know that I've seen it...I guess I might not have seen enough British comedy to make a fair judgement. I didn't think 4 Weddings and a Funeral or Full Monty was funny.
So when is the bloody Red Dwarf movie going to come out? It's been five years since that disappointing "cliffhanger" in the last season.
ZRB - think they aren't starting filming till april (there was a thread about i few weeks back), apparently in Australia (i wanna be an extra)
Houston, I think we have a problem!!!! can you comment on comedy without knowing Monty Python http://bau2.uibk.ac.at/sg/python/monty.html#who
Thanks Smeg. I remember when they said the movie would be ready for a late 2002 release, and they haven't even started filming? Glad it's being done in Oz, though.
do a google search..... don't think they have a massive pile of money, which could make the film better, but think the lack of funds has meant a long search for a site and think they are a couple places in europe picked out for filming and then they got cancelled......
Rent "The Life of Brian" if you are not likely to get offended by by jabs a literal interpretations of the Old & New Testament, if such might offend you go with The Holy Grail otherwise. Actually from my reading of your responses in this thread start with the Holy Grail. Both are great, but TLOB is more obtuse and is my personal favorite comedy of all time.
