Trump achieves a socialist goal! Tax the consumer and give the money to people who cannot survive economically. Making the American farmer the latest welfare queen. . . .

[QUOTE="MojoMan, post: 12452765, member: 39750"I agree that Mexico should be willing to do a lot more to stop facilitating illegal immigration into our country. Certainly nobody believes that these tariffs are the preferred arrangement between our two countries, including Donald Trump.

They should be able to negotiate an acceptable agreement, in whicgh case the tariffs will be reduced or withdrawn.[/QUOTE]

You "agree that that..." what? You certainly are not agreeing with Deckard. You instead seem to be agreeing with the idiot-in-chief.

But in reality, Mexico and the northern triangle countries have been doing a lot to curb immigration into the United States. Earlier this year DHS secretary nielsen negotiated a compact with these countries. trump's heavy handed approach and angry tariff threats only exasperate the situation... making things more difficult for people in these countries only makes coming to the United States more attractive as people try to escape the violence and poverty. Worse, the tariffs really hurt Americans.

Its an incredibly complex problem... and having a temper tantrum to get a vanity wall built or apply pointless tariffs is a simplistic and ineffective solution. Instead, the U.S. should work with the countries to improve the situation there to lessen the need to emigrate to the United States. And yes, where necessary, replace/improve border security. .

Again, solutions exist... unfortunately trump isn't interested in realistic and effective solutions.

I really do not understand this line of thinking.... Why would Mexcio be willing to do more for USA who just threatened them with tariffs? I think any country or person even with least amount of pride would be using the time to plan the retaliation rather than caving in for being a complete loser.

The economy is slowing, but not as bad as Wednesday’s private payrolls report suggests

I think we should ask trump's chief economic adviser, larry kudlow, about trump's trade policies...

    https://www.cnn.com/2019/06/06/politics/kudlow-trade-incalculable-damage-economy/index.html

Too bad the larry kudlow of today didn't listen to the larry kudlow of 2015.

Look I have no problem with tariffs on China since they have never played fair and ban companies like Facebook, Twitter, and most of Google in the name of their national security. They have been stealing our IP for far too long and something is finally being done about it. I'll take the hit even though our President still thinks China pays for the tariffs, that's fine. This Mexico situation though...man he's playing with fire. You can't solve diplomatic issues with tariffs in this manner and Republicans are too sheepish to do their duty to the American people and stand up for what is right. IMO it just sets a bad precedent, period.

Damn, looks like Texas is going to get absolutely crushed by these tariffs.

107 bb in annual imports from Mexco. That's more than the next two states (MI and CA) combined. Though (electoral battlegroudn) Michigan is technically more dependent as a % of GDP due to the auto industry. Also interesting, Kentucky (I'm presuming auto industry also?) will be very hard hit. - Senator Turtle the Grim Reaper of Democracy must find this really hard to swallow. He's had a rough week between this and his wife's corruption scandal, which would be career-destroying or presidency threatening for several centuries until 2 years ago. Plus he's probably going to have to work this weekend. Poor guy.

Except.. Mexico is already caving as they are now offering to make drastic changes to its asylum laws and to also deploy thousands of their troops to the border to curb illegal immigration, all in order to avoid the 5% tariff hike. Looks like Trumps going to be pulling another victory here soon.

Facebook, Twitter, and Google are definitely national security threat to China.
If Russia can manipulate your election through your own social media, imagine what CIA would do to China through these propaganda tools. Arab Spring looks destructive and bloody to anyone.

Plus Google did helped and protected terrorists in the name of protecting privacy and data. When Google was allowed to operate in China, the number of terrorism attacks soared . After Google left, the terrorism attacks became rare. The ban was justified and worked well.

no one side wins in a tariff war; but the tariffs end up hurting the consumers the most, by far.

    btw,
    u make it sound like China is the first country to play unfair economics w the US;
far from it, China is only the most recent one. it has learned from Jpn, SK, Taiwan and Singapore

China's economic interactions w the US have been a re-play of the US/Japan economic skirmishes during Ronald Reagan's presidency.
    • Jpn manipulating its currency to leverage its trade advantage
    • Jpn banning US automakers from selling their cars in Japan
    • Jpn refusing to grant Fed-Ex landing rights there
Japan was also heavily involved in industrial espionage against the US

Japan was the pioneer insofar as playing unfair economic tricks on US; then SK, Taiwan & Singapore.
    China is the newest player.

You know those tax cuts that went mostly to big businesses and the very wealthy? Well, if you got one, they went bye bye bye...

You do know that Mexico has been doing this for more than the past week, don't you? For example...

Mexico rounding up, deporting migrants hoping to reach U.S.

we now know why, on Tue, the Fed Chair made this "anti-recession" announcement, hinting that
the Fed may cut rates in order to counteract the recessionary forces induced by Trump's ever-expanding tariff follies

newly publized lagging economic indicators of recession, the basis for the Fed chair's "anti-recession" announcement

Bowing to US Pressure, Mexico to Deploy 6000 Troops to Guatemala

Mexican negotiators have also pledged to send 6,000 troops to Mexico’s border with Guatemala, the entry point for a recent surge of migrants who have then made their way through Mexico to the United States border. The Washington Post first reported the discussions on Thursday.

Officials from both countries have been talking for several days about the steps Mexico could take to satisfy Mr. Trump’s demand to reduce the number of immigrants flooding into the United States.

It boggles my mind that some still don't think we have an illegal immigration problem.
