Being loyal to the team and what it stands for is one thing. Willing to sacrifice team's success just for the sake of holding a grudge is another. Do you know why you hate Jerry Sloan? Because he's damn good at what he does. Because he's good enough to inflict some of the most painful memories to us Rockets fans. Because he WINS. If coach X with team Y is dirty/cheating/etc but gets swept by Rockets every single year, you wouldn't have the same resentment as you do now. NOBODY WOULD CARE. We would all laugh at his futile efforts and move on with our lives. But since Sloan wins, and wins against us, the scrutiny, hatred, and disdain are magnified hundredfold. People DWELL on it. We're not talking about a coach that violates rules, or cheats, or is a questionable character off the court. Players under him might smudge the definition of dirtiness, but you can't question his character and ability to coach. If someone stays a head coach at the same place for 20+ years, he's doing something right. If you're a true fan of the team, you'd put your personal grudge aside and root for a successful and respected coach to take over the team. Yes, I said respected. You can hate him, but give him props for what he's accomplished as a coach.
Personally, I think Jerry Sloan is PERFECT for this team. Look at the players he coach....all of them become hard-nosed bulldogs. I would think he love our players because we have many of the same type of players he want to coach. He knows how to change players and make them tough, physically and mentally. The bonus here is that we have players that are already built in that mode. They can only become tougher under Jerry Sloan.
I started following the rockets too late to have any real animosity towards the 'jazzholes', however i can see this as a excellent fit. Sloan's system could possibly push lowry's game to the next level.
Whatever. The difference between you and I is that I don't want my team to take the EASIEST path to a championship -- I want them to take the RIGHT one, the one with the most integrity. People hated Sloan for a reason, and it's not because he was successful -- nobody hates Adelman, and his record as a coach is arguably as good as Sloan's.
Sloan knows how to win, frankly i'm tired of this team losing. If not him then somebody else thats proven please. Eff the jazz but some people get way too personal.
Bulls played Jazz quite a few times. Do you think Bulls fans hate Sloan? No? Oh, that's right, because Jazz learned to grab ankles every time the two teams met. It's hard to hate an offensive minded coaches, because usually their teams don't play physically enough to tick people off. Do you hate the Phoenix Suns? Or the Warriors? People might not hate Adelman, but there were plenty of people weren't fans of Divac bringing flopping to the NBA. You also can't hate on a team that you don't play against much. Spurs' been consistently great, with Bowen (defines what dirty means in NBA) and Ginobili (top 3 in flopping), and they're IN OUR DIVISION AND THE CLOSEST TEAM TO HOUSTON. But since the teams almost never meet, the hatred barely registers on the meters. On the other hand, we ****ing hate Dallas and Utah because we play them all the ****ing time. Hiring the (imo) best available coach on the market is taking the easy route to a ring? Are you serious? I don't even know where to start on this... Sloan doesn't exactly fart out Larry O'Brien trophies, and we're not talking about hiring a convict here. Also, do you think the Heat fans are apologetic for taking the easy route by getting LeBron/Bosh, or Boston fans Garnett/Allen? If the same amount of good fortune happened to the city of Houston, us fans would be jumping up and down and giggling like pre-pubescent school girls. Are you going to say "no thanks Lebron, I want my team to win the hard way and the right way!"...??? If by giving the franchise the best chance to succeed is wrong, then I really don't want to be right. Give me Sloan, 50-55 wins a year, and some WCF appearances. My 2c.
Bring on Sloan, he is the best fit for our rag-tag team. I grew up hating the Jazz, namely Stockton & Malone's pick and roll, but the Jazz were the model of consistency. That is what we need now. Bringing some young coach will continue the trend of Houston sports going to the ****ter.
Damn good at teaching an antiquated dirty system that thrived only because half of their games were played in a dirty menacing arena that enjoyed dirty calls.
The Jazz played dirty, but how do we know Sloan told them to do that? You think Adelman told Scola & Martin to work on their flops? The only given is that Sloan always made damn sure his teams would 'do everything it took to win.' That's all that matters to me. The main impact a coach has is on the teams' playing style. I see two different paths Morey could take this summer, and I think the coach we hire will reveal which road we take: 1) If we hire a new or unproven guy, or go for more balanced coach, I think Morey has big summer plans: major personnel overhaul (perhaps trading away all one-dimensional players) and change on playing style. 2) If we do an internal hire: Elston Turner, Jack Sikma, or go after a proven guy like Jerry Sloan, I'd think Morey just does some minor re-tooling. Keep the same offensive strategy and refine. If this is the case, then it'll confirm for me that there was a tiff between the Rockets FO and Adelman.
Why? Lowry/Hayes pick and roll is not Stockton/Malone nor Williams/Boozer. Why would he come here to rebuild at thus stage in his life/career? We lack the personnel to run his system for 1, and 2 I don't think HOF coaches close to retirement are interested in a team 7-8 years away from contending. It's like all the washed up players in Miami. It's not the love of the game. They are there to WIN Now. I'm sure sloan wants to win just like Rick. He will demand that his teams compete and he will put his best team on the floor. Every night. Which would exclude TWill.
Brain says sure. Heart says hell no. According to some reports Morey wants "new school" and Sloan would be too similar to Adelman.
why would sloan want to coach a rebuilding team? why would the rockets want sloan if they already had adelman? the rockets are going in another direction. they don't need HOF coaches who want to win now.
Rick is most likely leaving because he doesn't want to be part of the rebuilding process. You are kidding yourselves if you think Jerry Sloan wants to comeback to a team that is rebuilding. If we aren't rebuilding then the decision to get rid of Rick Adelman was flatout stupid. So anyway you cut this idea it is a terrible one.
Its the players not the coach. Who would place Doc Rivers as a top coach? Why did Jackson not able to win on teams without talent? For that matter, any coach? Yes, I admit coaches do make a difference. But the effect is a minimal one, so why would you want to get the sole reason why we all hate the jazz to ply his trade as our coach?
