It's very simple, the Rockets energy and team flow comes from playing team D and getting stops. It builds their confidence and they play better and shoot better. When they get leads the team slacks because Harden is there and goes to sleep. They always expect him to save them and unfortunately the side effect of him doing that is the team often lacks heart. The mentality when they played on constant massive streaks last season was that they had to play hard the whole time. Without Harden's streak this team would be dead and they are not the same team from last year. They take his propping them up as a sign that they don't have to bring it. The Rockets better start playing like those streaks last year or they are dead. It would almost be better for the Rockets to have a 5 point lead the whole game so this wouldn't happen. They always **** the bed against inferior opponents and take games off. We could do that at the end of last year. This year we need ever damn win and you can count all of the games we pissed away this season and they account for the last two seasons. It's BS.

Great post. Should be required reading.

I still don't buy that Ariza and Luc were that amazing last year at creating that defensive safety net, especially since we continued to be great defensively even during the playoffs without Luc.

I think it comes down to simply effort. And with Harden absolutely expending the effort on D this year, it's baffling why the others don't always follow.
