I'd much rather discuss how bull**** it was that they called a roughing the passer penalty on Adibi on that one key play towards the Viking's endzone early on. He literally hit the guy right as the ball is leaving his hand, and they called it a late hit. Total BULL****. If that play was indicative of how the refs are going to call everything against Brett Favre this season, then I'm glad we aren't playing them again. You saw later on when Mario was going at Favre and had to pull up as he started to **** his arm back because he knew if he kept going they would call a penalty, even if it was clearly a clean hit.
I am in complete agreement. Though, the commentators picked up on it quickly too and agreed it was just a horrendous call. Referees have rust to shake off in the pre-season too, I guess/hope.
Just because Favre has been in the game for so long doesnt mean he knows how to block, come on. How many times has he had to block? He's a 40 yr old man who was in a position that caused him to b**** out and turn his back to avoid real contact. Expecting him to be able to properly block is silly. I mean, after all these years, Roy Oswalt still cant hit worth a ****...he should at least improve because he does go up to bat every time he pitches, so if you expect Favre to block, you should expect Roy O, a just turned 32 yr old to be able to hit after all these years of opportunity. Bottom line is that these players are good at what they are "supposed" to be doing. Roy O isnt supposed to work on his hitting or give a crap about it just like Favre isnt supposed to be out there trying to block a safety. He shouldnt have been put in that position. I dont like the guy much at all, but if you are 40 years old, your body has limitations. I wouldnt expect many people in his position to man up and go hard after a safety. It was a "Im too scared to hurt myself to block you up top, so Im going to roll into you to avoid contact" kind of block. It was a girl move, but I cant say at all that it was dirty. Not even close.
But expecting him not to lunge at a man's knees is NOT. I can't believe you're defending that chickencrap. No, but I do expect him not to throw his bat at the pitcher and not to slide with his cleats into somebody's calf -- you know, to not be dirty. No, the bottom line is a veteran dove at somebody's knees. He doesn't have to block like Orlando freaking Pace, just don't dive at a man's knees. How freaking hard is this to understand? His own peers called him out man. His own peers. I already shot down this incorrect analogy. Correct. But he *was*, and he didn't have to respond by throwing himself at a man's knees. With that man's back turned, no less. Inexcusable. So feel free not to throw it at another man's knees. But I expect every last one of them to not dive at a man's knees. The guy's back was turned. The guy had very little momentum. It was all-out dirty. It was sissy, dirty, and panzy all wrapped up into one. Keep lining up those excuses, and I'll keep shooting them down. There is no excuse for that crap. Every former player and analyst that saw the play agreed. Inexcusable. Doesn't freaking matter. And, I haven't heard if he is or not.
Sorry, my takes in this thread have grown terse. I'm just appalled and amazed at people making excuses for a man who threw his body at our guy's knees.
Pretty funny... 11:32 [Comment From buffaloglenn] Tough game last night against an excellent defense. John, any updates on injuries to Walter and Eugene Wilson? 11:32 John McClain: Wilson is okay. His pride should be hurt because of that pitiful effort he made on Chester Taylor's winning touchdown. It reminded me of Phillip Buchanon, rather Matador-ish.
Ive said it was a sissy, girlie play on Brett's part...he was too scared to man up. But, I dont think he was doing anything intentional...it was just a move to protect himself, and given the fact that he isnt the most athletic guy out there, he was limited to what he was capable of doing. It was a dumb, b**** move on his part. But it wasnt intentional. And you arent shooting down anything, youre just losing your cool.
Agreed. Disagree. You can be afraid to block without throwing yourself at a man's knees. Bad analogy with a pitcher batting: shot down. Saying the "bottom line" is a QB not having to be good at blocking: shot down (as a strawman). The "his body is old" excuse: shot down. You're making excuses, man. He threw his body at another man's knees. That's inexcusable. Inexcusable. His own peers called him out on it. How can you defend it when those who have played the game don't? It was a dirty, cheap, sissy, pansy, bush league act on behalf of an old geezer who should be retired right now. If Wilson so much as misses on regular season series because of it Favre should have to surrender an entire game check.
Several of his peers also said it was stupid, but not intentional/dirty. So the same question would apply: how can you say it was when his peers who played the game say it wasn't? I tend to agree with rezdawg - it was a guy who was in a bad situation, didn't know what to do, and did what seemed the most logical move for himself in a split second. It was stupid, but it was also a QB who may never have been in that position. And I think Favre's a douchebag in general. (of course, I also felt the same way about Trent Green's hit, where most people disagreed with me as well)
Im not excusing Favre from doing that...I dont think he was intentionally trying to hurt Wilson. If you think it was intentional, then you would think that someone that has been in the league as long as Favre has would have had at least a couple other incidents of being "dirty".
Major, I have obviously missed those comments. Don't disbelieve you, though. Rez, I see his actions in a bit darker light than both of you, but I hear what you're saying--you'd think he'd have already been dirty if he was dirty. I just can't get past it--with all the alternatives, he threw his body at a guy's knees. To me, if it's the first time he's dirty, then there's a first time for everything. I'm not in his head, so I can't say what his motives and intentions were. But why dive at a guy's knees? That's stupid, and just mean-spirited. Clemens-esque. I'm with you, Major -- a real douche.
What a joke. Now, because of the way people feel about his retirement drama, he's suddenly become a dirty player who is mean spirited and tries to hurt people? LOL He was put in a situation he's never been in before and went for a block. His block was cheap, lame, dangerous, stupid, etc., but there is no way he was being dirty. In a preseason game you think Brett Favre wanted to injure another player's knees, and also risk his own shoulder, just to be dirty? What's more likely, a player who's never been accused in over a decade of playing a game of a single dirty play suddenly getting a nasty streak and wanting to injure another guy who has not provoked him in any way... or... a player playing a position he has never played before in over a decade of playing a game being asked to throw a block he's never been asked before and in the time he had to decide what to do he made a poor choice that turned out to be dangerous.
What do you mean by this? I am sure that in all of his years of playing football, Favre HAS blocked before.
Look, I don't care if he's never in his life ever thrown a block. If he's been in the league 40 years and *still* doesn't know not to throw his body at a man's knees, he's a dumbass.
Not out in the open as a WR. He goes low like that as a QB blocking a lineman and on a running play and it isn't a penalty.
