I wouldn't say he was having a great year..... well maybe for a rookie. League ranks in parenthesis. Punt Average: 44.4 (23rd) Net Average: 37.8 (24th) Inside the 20: 15 (21st) Long Punt: 69 yards (7th) Fair Catches: 13 (15th)
not the greatest of rankings but i think the guy has done well in some big situations. punting stats are dependent on a lot of things, for example, I think the guy has a much bigger leg than his avg indicates but a lot of that could be due to shorter fields to punt with due to the offense
then wouldn't we want him to be higher up in the rankings in inside the 20 punts? not to rag on the rookie punter with a torn ACL, but this doesn't seem like that big of a deal to me.
It's not. It's just the phenomenon of winning games, which makes every player look good. Especially to a fan base as deprived as this one. Hartmann's an average punter, so he's not hard to replace. But he is an upgrade over Turk, that's for sure. As long as he's not the replacement, it's fine.
He's replaceable for 4 games. I don't like that Turk is immediately the favorite. Seems that Kubiak still has his problems with fairly evaluating performance. I still would love to know why/how punting to the pylon (when kicking past midfield) became a dead art. You had 90% odds of putting the ball inside the ten, where hanging punts to down inside the 5 work about 25% of the time and usually end up with a touchback. And with Little Leg Rackers on the squad, I'd really invest in a punter for that situation (4th down on the 40 to 50).
well it's not a big deal in the scheme of things, i'm just saying that the guy has played pretty well for a undrafted rookie punter and i think he does have a pretty good career ahead of him
It's Turk. Sigh. https://twitter.com/#!/caplannfl Also moves Rackers and his so-so leg to permanent kickoff duty.
McClain_on_NFL John McClain Texans are bringing back punter Matt Turk, 43. He punted for them from 2007-2010. Rookie Brett Hartmann was placed on IR today. Would have preferred Matt Dodge.
I had a feeling it would be Turk. I know he wasn't great last year but looking at his numbers they don't seem that bad? Lng Avg Net Avg 60 42.1 36.8 Hartmann's this year: 69 44.4 37.8
Was there really nobody out there better than Turk? He'll be punting it out the back of the end zone for the rest of the year.
Hm, I must admit those numbers surprise me. I personally thought he was playing much better than those numbers indicate.
