I wasn't calling him a jerk until I saw this headline... If he wants to play, fine. Just quit being an ass about it.
caught on company phone Brett Favre might want to invest in his own cell phone By MJD It's not as poetically idiotic as Chris Henry getting arrested while wearing his own jersey, but this one's in the same neighborhood. Remember those tampering charges that the Packers filed against the Vikings? And remember how I thought it would be difficult for the Packers to prove that Favre had made inappropriate contact with the Vikings? Well, that assumed that Brett Favre wasn't using a Packers-issued cell phone to make those calls to the Vikings. As it turns out, Favre may have done exactly that. From the Minneapolis Star-Tribune:
Delicious. I find it strange that teams issue cell phones...as a perk I assume? I wouldn't even take one if I was making NFL money. I'd rather keep my phone usage private in general.
Well, screw him...He's going to cry his way back into the NFL...At least he won't be on the Packers...
Just saw this on the NFL Network. Adam Schefter is reporting that Favre will report to Packers camp this weekend. What a circus that will be!
cap hit is irrelevant really, its more about if they release him he could easily go to a division rival. Like I said when this story first broke, their only choice is to trade him or keep him on the bench and live with it.
I think if he suited up as a backup that he might stand a good chance at getting his starting position sometime in the middle of the season. Aaron has been injured twice, and its possible he may suck it up by midseason. Assuming he gets his starter role back say at Week 4 or 5, that's an additional month of rest that could be crucial in prolonging his season, and be more likely to be healthy come postseason if they make it. I think if he could imagine a headline where he gets his starting position back and carries the Packers back into the playoffs after a slow start, his legacy wouldn't be damaged at all. He's looking at this the wrong way. Even if he never becomes the starter, whether or not the Packers suck it up this season, then it'll reflect poorly on the organization's stubbornness to give him a chance at all. Then all blame can be directed at them. Not him. And if the Packers do well and maybe even win the Superbowl, he gets his ring, gets to act like he did the whole passing down the torch to Aaron as his successor and can still save face. Instead he's just being a douche.
I'm tired of drama queen Favre. I used to like him a lot but that is over. I hope he gets traded and falls flat on his face.
Farve is too good to be a backup. Are the Packers even trying to win this year? They'll have trouble making the playoffs with Aaron starting, they have a chance to do big in the playoffs with Farve starting. You think Farve really cares what the media and other fans think of him after all this? He just wants to play football. He could care less about saving face. Playing with a different team isn't going to erase what he's done in the past.
How do you know the Packers will struggle to make the playoffs this year with Rodgers? Nobody has really seen him play or knows how good he is so he might just surprise you.
I'd replace too good with being too proud to be a backup. If he was concerned with the state of the franchise, and not himself, then he would be a backup for the team.
Packers Offer Favre $20 Million to Stay Retired http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=3512348 The Green Bay Packers, unable so far to trade Brett Favre and facing his arrival at training camp, are reportedly considering taking a step they desperately wanted to avoid: dealing him to a division rival. The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, citing a source close to the situation, on Wednesday reported the Packers were considering seeking a deal with one of their rivals, most likely the Minnesota Vikings or Chicago Bears, if all else fails. That follows reports that the Packers on Wednesday offered Favre a substantial sum of money -- as much as $20 million over several years -- to stay retired. On Monday, Packers general manager Ted Thompson said the Packers would not trade Favre within the NFC North. Favre, who has asked the NFL to be reinstated, is reportedly interested in playing for the Vikings, who play the Packers to open their season on Monday Night Football on Sept. 8. The Packers are committed to Aaron Rodgers as their quarterback of the future and are not considering Favre, who tearfully retired March 6th, returning to Green Bay as the starter. But while the Packers continue to try to buy themselves more time to deal, Favre has yet to talk to either team. Team president Mark Murphy traveled to Hattiesburg, Miss., to meet with Favre and his agent James "Bus" Cook on Wednesday, and multiple media outlets later reported that the team offered the quarterback substantial money to stay retired. WTMJ television in Milwaukee reported that the team offered Favre in the neighborhood of $20 million over several years to stay retired. The green Bay Press-Gazette reported on its Web site that the team offered Favre "a substantial salary" to stay away. Both reports cited sources close to Favre. But signs still point to the quarterback reporting to Packers camp. According to a source source close to Favre, said the Packers have told him they might limit him to individual drills if he shows up at training camp, the Press-Gazette reported. Murphy left the meeting in the early evening and had no comment for reporters but issued a statement Wednesday night. "I was in Hattiesburg today and had a nice visit with Brett Favre," the statement read. "We discussed a number of topics not related to football, including Brett's long-term relationship with the Packers. I consider our conversation to be confidential and am going to be respectful of Brett and his family and keep the details private. "[General manager] Ted [Thompson] and [coach] Mike [McCarthy] are going to continue to work on the football side of this issue. They have my full support." After the meeting, Cook was asked by the media if Favre could be back in Green Bay by Friday and he said that was a good possibility. "He would love to go back in Green Bay," Cook said, in comments broadcast by ESPNEWS. "I mean, that's why he started working out. But right now, it looks like he'll be the quarterback at Oak Grove High School." Favre worked out with the school's football team on Wednesday before the meeting. A league source told ESPN's Chris Mortensen on Wednesday night that NFL commissioner Roger Goodell hopes to speak with Favre on Thursday before he decides to reinstate him. Mortensen reported earlier Wednesday that Goodell was unlikely to rule on Favre's request for reinstatement Wednesday in order to give the sides more time to work out an agreement on the quarterback's future. "The commissioner is taking no action today," the NFL said in a statement Wednesday. "He wants to give both the Packers and Brett an appropriate amount of time to make decisions, including decisions impacting the team's roster and salary cap. When Brett is reinstated by the commissioner, we will announce it."
The Packers are really bungling this whole thing...not only does Favre call their bluff about returning to the team in some capacity but now their willing to pay him to stay away. If you don't want him that bad then just release him already, jeez.
What a huge distraction for the Packer players...This thing just needs to get settled, however that might be...
just trade him for god sake, let him play. he`s been on his last legs now for a couple of years, but he played so well last year, i`m sure he still has gas in the tank. minnesota, chicago, who cares. let him play.
"unable to trade him" ?!?! I don't get it. I would think there would be plenty of teams that would want Favre. Yeah, he's old. But he still has game.
You are competing for your division. Two of the teams in your division have massive problems at starting QB, where Favre would represent a major upgrade. One of them apparently was in illegal contact with Favre. Why on earth would you release him? That's a horrible use of an asset.
