I think there are several reasons SA might want to trade Barry. 1. He plays behind Ginobili who is an emerging super star who will only be getting more and more minutes. 2. Barry is still owed 4.95M, 5.4M, 5.85M (16.2M) and that is a lot for a backup playing limited minutes. 3. He had a down year so they are disappointed. 4. SA always has their eye on payroll as they are a small market team. There are several reasons the Rockets might be interested. 1. They went after him last off-season and supposedly made an offer but he went with SA. 2. While he does make a lot he is not overpaid. 3. Barry is one year younger than Wesley. 4. Barry can easily slide into the backup role next year and still get good minutes (we’re never going to have a high salary SG on the team with Yao & T-Mac making the max.) 5. Barry is a career 46% shooter and 40% 3pt shooter. Maybe it is a pipe-dream that SA would deal with us but it is a nice pipe dream.
Actually it works out salary wise for V. Baker + 2nd for Barry as well but then we would have 3 quality SGs looking for minutes.
Last summer I would have said yes but BB was a huge disappointment last year. He wasn't exactly in Pop's doghouse but for some reason he was nowhere to be found a lot of the time. He seemed to find his rhythm some late in the year and in a few playoff games but he never truly found his comfort zone. I wonder if it was because of Pop's defensive requirements. I don't think he can stop or slow down anybody. Both big and strong PGs like Billups or quick ones like DS and Jason Terry abuse him. At least Tony Parker can pressure the ball. Because of BB's big dropoff last year, I don't want him. His career took a downturn last year and that scares me off. He doesn't have 3 good years left, IMO.
I would love Brent Barry here ... it would be great to see the brothers finish out their career here, too. Last year, he was my favorite hope for PG. We were offering him more than what he signed for with SA. I don't think his contract is bad. What concerns everyone is why his play was not up to par last year. Anytime a player is in his 30s, and his play slips, we all get concerned there isn't anything left in the tank. But, there are lots of reasons why he'd still be good for us. Playing behind Parker and Ginobbli didn't give him a lot of playing time, and when he came there, I think he expected to start at SG. His attitude affected his play more than anything else, IMHO. If he came here, he'd be our starting PG, have a new start, and be with his brother on a championship contending team. Here's Barry's advantages: - intelligence: He matches Yao and TMac in that department - floor general: someone to set everyone up w/o wasting clock - court vision: he's amazingly aware of everyone on the court. - passer: pin-point precise passes into Yao to start off the inside-out - shooter: when Yao gets doubled, knock down the shot, or assist - threes: he's a.406 career average three point shooter - maturity: comes from great basketball family. veteran to balance - team player: fits Van Gundy's system, doesn't get out of control - height: at 6'6". he'd see over most PGs. - character: he's active in the community, and good person. - versatile: he can play both SG/PG, to go with best matchups - turnovers: 1.76 career avg - steady: (10.6 points, 5.7 assists, 3.6 rebounds before last year) not greedy There are 2 huge problems, though. (1) I seriously doubt that SA wants to trade him to us. He would be a missing piece they would fill for us, and we are quickly becoming their biggest competition to meet in the WC Finals. Why would they help their competition? (2) I'm not sure we have anything they'd want. The best option would be to send them Wesley, but I don't think he's what they are looking for either. Although they are looking for defense at that position, I think they want someone younger and more athletic. Perhaps they'd take an expiring contract to get out of his contract, but I doubt it. So, I think we're going to end up with Payton, since Sura won't be back to health for another year. Of course what I'd really like is if we could trade Howard to CHI for one of their guards. I also wouldn't mind if we picked up Jason Williams for backup, but we'd have to get rid of an expiring guard contract to pull that off ... maybe that's what the 2 for 1 would be about.
I also was turned away by his performance last year and was glad we got Jon instead. I don't think SA would make a deal with us if it didn't favor them.
I like this move alot, and in all honesty you could have both Barry brothers out there at the same time, their combined passing and ballhanding skills would allow them to pool the PG load. Would be a great story with Jon going into his last year would allow us to keep a Barry on the roster for a couple more years. I'd give up Wesley, and Badiene for him. and a 2nd rounder. or a swap of 1st rounders since they will undoubtedly finish with a better record.
Jon Barry's numbers with the Rockets last year: 7.0ppg, 2.6rpg, 2.6apg, .441 FG%, .457 3P% Brent Barry's numbers with the Spurs last year: 7.6ppg, 2.3rpg, 2.2apg, .423 FG%, .357 3P% Bones is overpaid, he shot the ball terribly (by Barry standards) last year, his defense is atrocious, and he's no where near the athlete he once was. We don't need him. He had a chance to come here last offseason, we gave him an offer, and he turned us down. I don't want him, and the Rockets don't need him. Pass.
I'd rather keep Wesley than Baker. Spurs are not going to take on someone they have NO use whatsoever, at least not till trade deadline.
Spurs won't help the Rockets. They will gladly swallow Barry's contract just to keep him from a competing contender. Same with Nesterovic. East or bust.
You forgot DUNKED FROM FREE-THROW LINE to win dunk contest. Can you imagine a white guy winning gold in the 100M? Kind of the same thing.
You forgot these: - snappy dresser: knows his Sean John from his Versace - great cook: his savory duck aspic with mint-mango chutney is to die for - cool hair: who doesn't like a 33-year-old with bangs?
