Baseball is crazy... First we have the ball across midfield, then a penalty takes us back 10 yards. We thought we were in FG range but it was called back for offensive holding and another 10 yards back. We punt, but quickly find out the other team sucks just as much, gaining no ground. We almost intercept the ball but trip at the last moment. Now we are waiting to receive the punt again. I have a feeling this may go into overtime.
Now that Reggie isn't involved in the organization, I doubt he's even paying attention to the moves we've made. Probably took a quick look at Breggy still being a free agent and made an assumption.
If Bregs had a talk with Correa, Keuchel, and Maldonado about their free agency experiences... it would not shock me if he ends up somewhere really random at way below market.
Out of all of our players, Cole is the only one that signed that long term incredible deal and went to a large market team. Of course he wasn't part of the 2017 WS fiasco either. Makes you really wonder. Especially since the 3 teams vying for Bregman right now have a strong connection to that team already in Springer, Hinch and Cora. Surprised the Twins aren't "all in" on him.
George Springer's contract was quite sizeable for the time... probably would have gotten more if free agency hit a year early if not for service time manipulation.
It's not a hugely efficient allocation of resources to bring in another high priced infielder when our need is at outfield... We have too many people who need to rotate through DH if we brought on Bregman... Alvarez and Yainer are already two that need to be in the DH rotation... and now we'd add a 3rd if we have 2 players who are primary third basemen (Paredes, Bregman). I don't see it working out the way we want it to... and it probably locks in an outfield of Jake Meyers, Chaz McCormick and Dubon, with Yordan playing LF for 50 games. Dezenzo is double blocked at 3B as well. I love Breggy, but this doesn't appear to work well if we are using our brains instead of our heart.
There is just about zero concern with finding enough playing time for Paredes. He can play 60-90 games as the primary backup at 1B/2B/3B and 40-100 games as the primary LF against RHP. This is still a roster that projects Mauricio Dubon and Taylor Trammell to combine for >600 pa. There’s PLENTY of space for both Paredes and Bregman if that’s what Crane wants to spend his money on.
Paredes has not played the OF since at least 16 years old. Why do yall assume he can just plug-and-play out there?
We are a franchise that forced a players to play out of position as a tradition because talent overrides positional preference. Granted I don't want to force Singleton to play center like they did with Berkman.
Because it’s not that hard for a professional baseball player with the skills needed to play 3B to play LF. There will potentially be some growing pains, but immediately he will be able to get to routine flies and make above average throws. The only area of concern is range and tracking balls, but the question there is reps more than ability. Also, even tho he hasn’t played OF as a pro, it’s very likely he’s taken flies in the OF in practice or played OF in offseason leagues.
What about Pena and his arm to left... and Bregman to short... this won't be the first time it was played around with...
That would be moving 2 players into positions they aren’t used to. It’s simple, Paredes can play LF. It’s not a big deal. He will start out as below average to average and by about 50 games in he will be average to above average.
horseshit, unless you don't care if they play it well or not He has never played the OF, ever. Catching fungo does no equal playing the OF Just maybe some growing pains. Maybe. horseshit horseshit What I'm trying to say is why do some experiment turning a IF into an OF instead of getting an OF to play OF?
You can say it’s horseshit but it’s purely subjective so not sure why you wanna talk so dramatically. We’re only discussing this as part of speculation that Houston will sign Bregman. Especially if Bregman is going to take a relative discount to stay in Houston, it makes great sense for Houston to settle for having a potentially below average under-experienced defensive LF who can hit if it means having potentially the deepest lineup in the AL.
