Because anything can happen in the playoffs and they foolishly thought they had a chance by being buyers. Pre-2017, I would have accepted a decade of pain to just have one ring.
Honestly, I don't think the Soto deal changes things that much. It will be similar to ARod's deal that stood as a record for a very long time and will be looked at as beyond stupid. Ohtani is a unique player that has the value of 2 stars, which is the reason he commanded so much.
Checks notes....the Astros have won a World Series in 2022 with a lot of the same roster they have now, and the Angels have not won more games in a season the last decade as the Astros just did. Now if the Astros suck and it becomes apparent that they are no longer contenders at the deadline, sure trade him. Until then, the Astros are not in the same situation.
Plus, it may only be a couple of years deal to the Mets who could very well try to trade him back to the Yankees in a few years.
The Red Sox, along with the Houston Astros, New York Yankees and Detroit Tigers, are considered among the strongest bidders for Bregman, according to a source with knowledge of his free agent process. Though Bregman has played third base almost exclusively in the big leagues and won a Gold Glove at the position in 2024, the Red Sox envision him at second base, allowing Rafael Devers, for now, to remain the team’s third baseman. Bregman has publicly said he would be fine with a position change. But Boston’s pursuit, according to an industry source, is somewhat complicated by some internal disagreement over Bregman. While manager Alex Cora and team president Sam Kennedy are known to be big proponents of Bregman, the source said some members of the baseball operations staff, including chief baseball officer Craig Breslow, are more circumspect when it comes to the player. Interestingly, there are people in the Red Sox organization who believe Bregman is likely to stay with the Astros, while some prominent Astros folks think he’ll end up with the Red Sox.
It would be very disappointing to learn that Tucker had another gear that he only shifted into for a contract year. I would prefer that he was traded to the least desirable team in the league as soon as possible as to learn that.
2 positions for 1, with Paredes having shown great offense albeit inconsistently. Kind of a lateral move at best if we lose Bregs, but an extra year of team control over Tucker
Suzuki and Paredes alone would be a huge return for Kyle in my opinion. If a good prospect is included that's icing on the cake.
Players get paid for the years on their contract. Tucker being an Astro in 2026 or not does not impact the situation on whether the Astros should trade or not trade Tucker. Will getting value in a player's walk year be more important than getting the value in other years? That's the question. I'm skeptical that the Astros can trade Tucker, other teams do something stupid or the Astros are so much smarter than everyone else that they can trade Tucker and get more value in 2025 than Tucker is worth. If it happens, great. I tend to celebrate when other teams make mistakes instead of banking on them in specific transactions.
I don't pay attention much to the Cubs. This might actually be a decent/good deal as on the surface this seems like Cubs being idiots from someone who doesn't follow the Cubs. Memo to self: When I leave for a meeting mid post, I should refresh a page before posting.
