If you take out the broken hand '23 season, his 2018-current pace is 165 . I would be willing bet that he averages 157+ hits per season (if he avoids major injury) from '25--'28. It's something to root for, anyway. Hopefully, he stays healthy and makes it interesting.
600 hits and 80 HR over the remaining 5 seasons of his contract would be a good goal. That would put him at 2800+ hits and 300+ HR. Those are lock HOF numbers, and if he is still even close to healthy and wants to keep playing, he could sign a 3 year extension to play as a fringe regular to get to 3000 hits.
That would probably mean he suffered a major injury and missed close to a full season. I think he can get 600 hits and 80 HR in 4 years. That would be the goal I would set.
I think you’re underestimating the likelihood of Altuve declining or getting hurt over the next 5 seasons. Hes 35 years old.
And that's accurate. If he just gets hit and breaks his hand or messes up his hamstring it will cost him time
The one thing I know about Altuve, is he’s been exceeding expectations since the Astro scout gave him a look in Venezuela leading to signing him. He went from double A strait to the MLB because the Astros big league team sucked so bad they had no choice. And everyone was thinking he’d keep 2nd base warm, until Delino DeShields was ready to hit the ground running. He was a batting champion, a multiple 200 hit season, an MVP, and a perennial all star 2nd baseman. But he was never supposed to do any of it, as no player 5’5” has ever done in like decades! If anyone can get to 3000 hits, it’s Altuve. He’s built for it!!!
The highest paid player isn't necessarily the "Man" You think the coaches and young players would go to Devers over Bregman for insight or advice? Boston is going to be the best team in the regular and Bregman will be hugely influencial on and off the field. but they will get stonewalled in the postseason by Framber, Brown, Arrighetti, and Javier. Sparring back and forth with you isn't accomplishing anything. Let's see how things go.
I don't mean to spar back and forth. I just pointed out that Bregs like 99% of players always take the most money they can get, especially Boras clients. BTW, I don't blame players for taking the most money they can get, I would do the same if I was in their shoes. Make no mistake there's no loyalty between management and players or vice versa, simply put it's a business for both aides. This is why when you were coming up with all of those scenarios that had Bregs coming back I tried to tell you it wasn't going to happen. I didn't mean to be mean about it and if you took it that way I apologize.
Billy Wagner said it best - To get votes for the Hall of Fame going to New York helped. Same thing with the Boston Red Sox
So he turned down a $171.5 million 6 yr deal from Detroit. That's stupid. He's not gonna make $26 million a year for the 2 years following the Red Sox deal. He'll be lucky to get $20 million per. At least we know we probably stood little chance even if Boston didn't make this ridiculous offer.
Boras may have been pointing to Snell as a potential outcome. Make $30M in 2025 and have a monster year in Fenway then shoot for something like $175M/5yrs next year. I think it was very foolish but I also think Bregman wanted to play in Boston so was simply willing to take less money to go there.
I readily admit I was unrealistically hopeful and was wrong. I also think, in hindsight, that going to Boston is the best thing he could have done for his own personal legacy. This gives him an opportunity, and I think he is still good enough to capitalize. I fully expect in 2-3 years he will be viewed as a superstar and a face of the sport. That was never going to happen in Houston. It's till sucks though.
