He should have been Bregman’s agent

You very well could be right, since pitchers and catchers report today and nothing significant has been done to address the outfield all offseason. Considering Crane’s track record, I feel the Astros front office has a plan B they are ready to try and execute now that Bregman is officially not returning. Whether it is reengaging the Cardinals on Nolan Arenado or discussing outfielders/second baseman like Lars Nootbaar or Brendan Donovan, talking to the Rays about Brandon Lowe or Josh Lowe, engaging the Red Sox about Yoshida if they are willing to eat enough salary to make his AAV work, or discussing Taylor Ward with the Angels.

It could also be signing a free-agent reliever like David Robertson or Hector Neris to fill the void left by Ryan Pressly’s departure.

So you’re basing this on a gut feeling rather than clear factual evidence from the past 4 years?

I will say I admire your optimism.

If we get Arenado then we'd know if our offer to Bregman was legit still out there for him. If nothing happens then I feel we were on this course regardless.

Are you an alt account of Hey Now's? You two sound exactly the same on this issue. Who cares if we're offering him less money. Dude would be wealthy for literally generations with us. Try being loyal, Bregman. Try that out you b****.

I love the posts here that are like Bregman needs to just take the cash bag and say to hell w/ the Astros. There are some posters that are nuts. We are talking wealth beyond the grave when Bregman dies and posters are complaining about "well, wouldn't you get the most money out of an employer?" . It's not the same thing at all. I've never been offering a very fair contract of 6/156 and then been like you know, I need a few million more. It's an asinine take for anyone to cling to.

Agreed. If the move is a pitcher, the Astros need to get him into camp as soon as possible to start ramping up for opening day. If it’s a bat, they also would want to have him in camp before Spring Training games begin.

Really not that great of a deal after all if this is the case.

Oh man! He really SHOWED us. What a MASSIVE improvement over a perfectly good Houston offer.

    Uh yay?

Bregman got paid. Good for him!

How are you going to celebrate this monumental clutchfans posting victory?

Yeah that changes things. If the “real” value is $90M, Bregman ****ed up. He’s not gonna tack on another $70M+ after that contract.

He ended up getting less from his free agent contract than he did from the extension Houston gave him years ago.

Yeah, the Tigers offer was better if this ends up being the case.

I think the thing a lot of folks are missing - Bregman (and his wife) have business ventures outside of baseball... and a young son. He is a baseball guy through and through, but he has a post-baseball life planned. Exiting baseball in his mid 30's makes a lot of sense. I can tell you that he has aspirations for greater things beyond baseball in the near term.

There would have to be some pretty crazy deferrals or they are using a ridiculous discount rate on that short a contract to get from $120MM to $90MM. It makes sense in Ohtani's case because the contract is so long and the deferrals are so far out. It would be weirder in a 3 year deal.

If that's really accurate, that's not a great deal - he would have really wanted to be in Boston to make that work. And likely is just hoping to opt-out next year after a Fenway-inspired season.

Pretty sure the discount rate is the same applied across all of these contracts. If what Olney is reporting is true, there is a massive amount deferred and/or the payments are being made far down the road.

Boston paying Bregman 40 million a year but wasn't willing to pay Betts 30 million a year.
