Trading Tucker when the windows is open is asinine especially when we had to resort to the likes of Gamel and Heyward to be competitive this season in his absence.
I'm seeing a bunch of rumors but nothing official. Hopefully this is true. https://www.si.com/mlb/astros/news/houston-astros-predicted-to-bring-back-all-star
Cool. Don’t care. That’s directly from Crane. Like Buck said, it’d be completely stupid not to explore it, particularly when it’s unlikely you’re resigning him. Also potentially stupid to trade him when the window is open. But the Astros also had the best record in baseball while he was hurt. It’s baseball, he’s replaceable. We’d have to see it in context with whatever else they plan to do this offseason.
IIRC if you let him walk you get something. Not as much, but something. You also get to compete next season. If you're into that.
It really just depends on what’s on the table. You gotta know that. If the Astros want to compete then they will compete. That doesn’t hinge solely on Tucker
Let him walk after we win the pennant and get those comp picks is preferred over letting the Rangers and Mariners have some October baseball instead of us.
If I were Dana Brown, I would be dangling him right off the bat. If the right offer comes across the table, you take it. Of course you can be choosy.
I also saw what happened when Boston dealt Mookie prematurely in the middle of their window. No rings. And false hope in the rebuild.
Fair enough but I think the team can deal him and still keep their competitive window open. We know he isn’t coming back.
Boston sabotaged their own return by including Price as a salary dump in the deal. Verdugo was a 55 OF and the #35 prospect in MLB according to mlbpipline. Jeter Downs was a 55 grade SS but not in the top 100 prior to the trade (#44 in 2020 after the trade, likely due publicity) Connor Wong was a 40 grade organizational depth catcher. Fangraphs had Verdugo rated 50 and ranked 117th prior to his graduation in 19. They had Jeter Downs unranked as 45 2b, but by the 2019 update he was up to 89th so clearly on the upswing. Compare that to the Padres return for Soto ( included a Meyers level CF Grisham) King: A 3 WAR pitcher w/ 2 years of control. Brito: Yankees #27 mlbpipeline and #15 FG prospect who had a promising start as a SP and 6 years of control. Vasquez: Yankees #14 and #11 prospect SP who had a very good cup of coffee in '23 and 6 years of control. Thorpe: Yankees #8 and #7 prospect SP who was flipped to White Sox. Higashioka : A very good back up catcher with 1 year of control remaining. Look what that deal did for the Padres. ( and the Yankees actually the best trades are win-win)
I have been trying to find an Astros comp for a potential Tucker trade. Pence is a good one, but he was traded at the deadline with over a year left. I think the Glenn Davis trade is a good model for what the Astros could get. Davis was older and played a less important defensive position, but had a comparable resume. The problem is that prospects weren't tracked and graded publicly like today but. . . Steve Finley was a clearly talented, young CF who flew through the minor leagues but had shown below average results in 1 1/2 seasons in MLB. Pete Harnisch was 2 seasons into his career. He was still improving but already established himself as a solid MOR starter with several years of control remaining. Curt Schilling was coming off of a very good rookie season as a multi inning reliever after being a very good starter in the minors. Those 3 players' results w/ Astros: Finley: 107 OPS+ and 16.1 bWAR in 4 seasons as starting CF. Harnisch: 8.2 bWAR over 117 starts in 3 seasons + strike year 1994. He was an All Star in 1991. Schilling: -0.1 WAR in 1 season despite 2.75 FIP in 75.2 IP out of the bullpen in 56g The Astros should be able to get 3 young controllable players who would be significant contributors in 2025. But I still don't think they will trade him.
We were also on rebuild mode both times, expecting to lose for at least the next 2 seasons. In basketball terms, this is like trading Harden from OKC early because 'we might lose him for nothing' fears rather than trying to win a ring when the window is open...
