    I'm very sad. I wish him the best. He should retire.

    If Yao's done then he needs to go back to China and raise a **** storm. They rode him into the ground during summers when other players got to rest. Their national team was nothing without him, and they'll probably be nothing after him.

    But Yao won't do that. He's too nice.

    Honestly, I think the NBA and their 82 game schedule was way harder on him than the CNT or the CBA.

    I think it's a combination of factors. The long, grueling 82 game NBA season, then no rest because he had to play in bullcrap tournaments like the Asian Championships or the Stankovic Cup or whatever. China should've had the foresight to see that NBA success for Yao would've done far more to raise the profile of Chinese basketball. I know I'd take a deep NBA playoff run rather than a win over South Korea or Lebanon.

    But also, how many of these injuries were just plain bad luck? Not even caused by the gradual overworking of Yao's big body, but by someone like freaking Mehmet Okur accidentally stomping off one of his toes?

    As I've said, I've been proud to be a Yao fan. But the bad luck has been too much to believe sometimes.

    I am fairly certain playing for his country and then playing for us did help ruin his career. A man that tall simply cant go through that grueling schedule. Kobe Bryant can barely play for Olympic teams and make it through his season.

    I wonder if we're starting to see a rash of ongoing injuries to young players due to year-round leagues that never give these guys time to rest (or to move to other muscle groups by playing other sports). John Wall, Brandon Roy, Greg Oden, Andrew Bynum, etc. An awful lot of chronic* injuries these days.

    * No 420 pun intended.

    Sounds like a trend to me. Except for Bynum and Oden who had these issues before they played in the league. That was a trend of their careers also kind of like Yao Mings. Which if we had followed the trend? We still could have seen it coming.

    the heavy tape around ankles forces the knee joint to move more than in should, so that's a factor, at least with some knee injuries.

    If Yao retire...it will be a huge loss for Chinese fans or asian fans all over the world. I know i won't be a Rockets fan anymore and probably won't visit here again. I am a YOF and it gives me joy and the reason to watch the Rockets. It's depressing.

    i think some blame lies with jvg. although he got the most out of yao and tmac, he rode both of his "stars" into the ground. now both are "broken" with what seems like premature endings to their careers. :(

    Completely expected. No surprise. Nada. Zilch.

    I dont understand why folks had their hopes up high.

    A 7-6 center with a history of foot/leg injuries and coming off an entire missed season....
