Could they be related if the atrophy in the leg that occurred after the surgery helped cause it?

Well can't say we didn't see this coming

My question is how can you get injured rehabbing? I thought exercises done during rehab are stuff like elliptical bikes, low-gravity treadmills and other non-impact activities? Did he break his leg walking in a pool?

Or maybe as durvasa said the rox madical staff had an epic fail once again.

Really disappointing news, perhaps more so for Yao than for the fans. Yao has been an exemplary Rocket, a real class act, and I really hope, perhaps unrealistically, he can come back as a role player and extend his career. But he did say, last year I think, that if he could not recover 100% he would retire.

So where does that leave us? Probably middle of the pack, like last year, perhaps a little too good for the lottery.

Clutch is just reporting based on the email that was sent out.

but if what you say is true (i have no medical experience at all) then its probably worse news in that its probably his foot again and so end of his career for sure. This could be then seen more as a "saving face" type deal where the org doesnt want to be seen looking like they forced Yao to play even with the minutes restriction and resulted in him injuring himself again on that same foot.

Either way I've had a pitt in my stomach since the news broke, I feel horrible for Yao.

Yeah that was a couple of years ago. If you actually watch games NOW, Yao Ming is about to retire while DH is not even 26 years old.

Can we use the injured player exception to sign another player?

To me this is a epic fail with rehab. They obviously injured him in rehab. The staff has got to be fired. This is the second athlete they disabled completely and sometimes when they are rehabing like Tmac. I completely think the entire strength and conditioning and medical staff should be replaced. Completely. Honest opinion. Yao is a sad case but you make changes if things dont work out and keep on pushing and pushing until something happens positive. You never stay pat unless you have a completely young core who needs some seasoning to develop.

It can be related if the new fracture is due to the re-aligment surgery, which was done to fix the navicular fracture. I'm assuming they related those two to point out it wasnt caused by the latest sprain against Washington.

with the amount of rehab he had and his relatively young age there should not be any atrophy . atrophy would have been there the 1st 2-3 onths after surgery . but i recall they did about a year of PT.

We could have had a training staff of Abraham, Jesus & Mohammed and Yao would still have broken down.

It is not on the staff it is just Yao's size is too big to handle the NBA.

It's pretty bad for us, Rockets fans, but just imagine how hard it is for him.

He wants to play, he feels the pressure of more than a 1 billion people behind him... Oh. it's horrible

just try to imagine his reaction when he heard the result. I can't, it's really hard to imagine and it's a ton harder to feel it.

If you look at his legs though he had major atrophy in his left leg, and his foot was restructured, which kept him off of it for a long long time.

His left leg still looks noticably smaller.

Ryder have known this for a while. They have been sending mixed signals for a couple months concerning him coming back.

Staff mishandled Tmac also. has alot of injuries every year. Including Ariza last year who is now healthy on another team. Battier in many years. Brooks. Whatever they are doing they have a horrible track record worse than any staff within the NBA for the past decade with injuries and training programs. Just an observation.

I dont think the atrophy they've been refering to was caused by the surgery or off time after it. I think Yao was probably having problems doing some kind of foot drill/exercise in the last week or so and they assumed it was due to weakness, but it was the fracture. They probably did the MRI after the strengthening exercises werent helping.
