I think it is clear now that every school should have a cop on duty at all times. I think most middle and high schools already have this, but it should be a requirement.

Also, every school should have visitor tracking systems that scan people's backgrounds like this company. However, it sounds like this kid either had worked at the school in the past or that his mother worked there, so I doubt that would have helped in this case.

Its still actually more simple than that...everyone is focusing on things that are costly and time consuming. The most obvious thing is to LOCK the doors from the outside. Lock gates. Funnel visitors to one entrance that is monitored. Have them empty their pockets prior to entering. Things like that.

I disagree. I'm pretty sure many urban areas have very strict gun control laws, yet there's still a lot of shootings.

It's not the key issue. It's one part of the solution. People like you that refuse to even consider tighter gun control are a big part of the problem.

And even the crazy sounding Ryan Lanza was wrongly identified, too.

<blockquote class="twitter-tweet"><p>so aperently im getting spammed bc someone with the same name as me killed some ppl... wtf?</p>&mdash; Ryan Lanza (@Ryan__Lanza) <a href="https://twitter.com/Ryan__Lanza/status/279677363938263041" data-datetime="2012-12-14T20:00:54+00:00">December 14, 2012</a></blockquote>

Like they do at the federal building here in Lubbock. Armed guard outside the building. Metal detector inside the building. Just like in the airport.

They shouldn't have to, so maybe it's good that they don't.

I read somewhere that teachers were telling the students that someone was hammering as a way to keep them from being scared.

It's like Gerry Sandusky all over again. Idk if it was the play by play announcer or radio host, but someone with the Baltimore Ravens Radio team got nasty messages on twitter for having the same name.

They'll all come out with completely different experiences unfortunately (fortunately for some). Apparently, some of the kids were led out the front and had to walk by dead bodies.

He does sound like yet another *potentially* dangerous Ryan Lanza. Talking about being depressed all the time, no matter how hard he tries it's not good enough, doesn't remember what happiness feels like, the world would be a better place without him, F. this, F. that, F. Thanksgiving?!

    PICK. HIM. UP.

People need to quit worrying about who he is on social media sites. The POS b*stard is dead. The media will release more information as the week rolls on. Only negatives can come out of attacking social media pages.

apparently the doors are locked after 9:30 am, but this occured prior

would make sense to have a plain clothes officer in every school on rotating shifts, along with employees armed and trained in self defense

I for one believe that in order to get a licensed weapon...people should pass a psych eval...we have to find this social degenerates before they get a chance to devastate communities..

I have to say, I don't think this happens enough to warrant such over reaction.

Still can't believe someone would shoot little kids.

Yes, and those places typically have crippling poverty, reduced police presence, etc.

This is the same "but Mexico has gun violence" argument, just repackaged.

It's very simply explained and understood.
