Bob Dylan is undeniably influential. But the big 3 are Presley, the Beatles, and Michael Jackson. Record sales don't lie:

    1 billion records or more

The Beatles United Kingdom 1960-1970 Rock / Rock and Roll / Pop /
Elvis Presley United States 1953–1977 Rock / Pop [4][5][6]

500 million to 999 million records
Bing Crosby United States 1926–1977 Traditional pop/Jazz [7][8]
    Michael Jackson United States 1967–2009 Pop / R&B [9][10][11][12]

I guess Bing Crosby is up there, too. Bob Dylan's impact was most significant, I feel, on other artists. He literally changed the game in terms of how rock artists could write and sing. Led Zeppelin was huge, as well, for album sales and impact on other musicians. But, you know, they're all up there.

Jackson preserved what Elvis and the Beatles created: crossover appeal and showmanship. The seventies were a great time artistically, but I think musical genres and tastes were more sharply and evenly segmenting into Rock, R & B, Disco, Soft Rock and Country: along the same generational, political and racial fault-lines that the country and world were at the time. By incorporating black funk, Euro synthpop, white rock and Broadway-type dance routines all in one, Jackson was able to bring together a lot of different audiences and helped revive the contemporary pop act.

Like the white kid from Tupelo who acted black in the '50s (when it still wasn't really cool), and the British preppies who were rockers, hippies and stoners after all, Jackson was also another unique personality: a popular black act of the late '70s/early '80s that wasn't overly political, sexual or, like all other musical acts then, completely and utterly coke-addled.

Perfectly listenable and marketable thirty years later. Too bad for his half-a-billion dollar debt load, MJ's probably gonna lose his songs once this thing goes into probate. Get ready for some crappy, crappy covers.

Every generation has its superstars. My parents would say that Frank Sinatra was the biggest star ever. My Grandmother used to tell me that no one could ever surpass the popularity of Rudy Vallee.

In another twenty years you might have people making arguments that Miley Cyrus is the greatest of all time.

Here's my problem with Elvis Presley on that list. I would say that there are significant portion of the U.S. population that would never recognize a Presley song. The beetles, Dylan and Michael Jackson truly crossed color, creed, and generation lines.
