I remember when U.S. pop culcuture first invaded China in the 80's, MJ's MTV was shown on every store that had a VCR. and people would just gather and watch it over and over again.

today, 80% of of my msn friends' signatures are honoring Michael Jackson.

I caught wind of this fairly early and to my surprise was the first person in my whole network to post about it on Facebook, but it didn't really hit me until about an hour later when I was driving in the car and flipped to 99.1 where they were playing his songs...

There will never be another. :(

    R.I.P., Michael.

Say what you want about how weird Mike was, the guy faced media attention like nobody else in the world, and had to deal with fame since being a small child exposed to a harsh world.

I think in the end, all he wanted was some peace and quiet.

    Hopefully he has it now.

So does Justin Timberlake take over the King of Pop crown now?

JT is the heir apparent no doubt.

Started off in a boy band, except he's been slowly changing from extremely white to enough street cred to become black.

I was thinking about that this morning.

Who, in popular culture (unelected), would create this much fuss if they died?

I can think of very few celebs who would leave this kind of wake.

Why? Is changing your voice to falsetto in "hip hop" considered a talent now?

    In that case, Prince.

Wow, can’t believe he’s gone. I still remember seeing the Jackson 5 in that domed theater (Tower Theatre?) in Sharpstown as a kid. We couldn’t hear much because of all the screaming in the audience, but they sure put on a great show.

I also remember Rock With You being one of the first 45 records I ever bought after I got my first record player for my 7th birthday. It was all about Michael Jackson, KISS, and the Houston Oiler Fight Song.

Michael Jackson songs my band has in our regular setlist:

    ABC
    I Want You Back
Shake Your Body (Down to the Ground)
Don’t Stop Till You Get Enough
    Working Day and Night
    Thriller
    Wanna Be Starting Something
    Beat It

Man, playing them will never be the same. :(

RIP, Michael. You were a bit of a freak, but your music touched more people than can ever be counted.

I love Prince, but he can't even buy his way onto pop radio these days.

I think that's why this is such a big deal. The answer is: nobody.

Oh, I thought he was referring to people in today's pop culture.

I fully agree with the Princess Di comment.

    come on.

    elvis=the beatles=michael jackson>>>justin timberlake

am i missing something here? i'll freely admit that i may be too old to understand the signifigance of justin timberlake but the rest of those guys were cultural phenomenons who altered the course of music history.

Fixed. No need for hyperbole.

Anyway, here's Michael's last photo, as printed by Entertainment Tonight:

I think that her's was so much bigger due to the way she died and the things surrounding her death. I do not mean to say that to belittle her death or demean it. We'll actually see if Jackson's will match it in the next few days.
