my sister works there. she confirmed it yesterday. it was so bad, they couldn't tell what gender the jumper was.
Actually, the "splat" was on an exposed concrete slab. The Bar area was celared out for renovations......it is being replaced with a new larger bar, that might now include a ghost. As of the morning, the hotel lobby is still closed and locked down like Fort Knox.
Rumor is, he/she jumped cause they were being forced out of the hotel. If this is true, considering the situation in the aftermath of Ike, WOW. I'm really surprised no media outlets have picked up on this. Isnt it ususally BIG news when the coroner is reporting to a DOWNTOWN address? Macalu, can your sister shed some more light into this?
I know that guy actually, and have worked tangentially with his advocacy group re: the GG bridge's suicide barrier. Dramatic suicides are often unreported by the media. Two people jump from the GG Bridge every month, and they never get reported. The 'right-to-know' and 'newsworthiness' needs are outweighed by the 'stop giving people ideas' needs. It seems weird, but there is a pretty sizable body of research that shows that the actual ACT of suicide is quite impulsive - lots of people think about it alot, and need treatment. But the actual final act of going ahead and doing it, is usually pretty impulsive. Sounds counterintuitive, but apparently, it is true. They know this from failed suicides and 'successful' suicides both. Apparently, for the GG Bridge at least, it is like the Holy Grail of suicide for a lot of people, in that it is dramatic, creepily beautiful, and fricking easy. Its the only monument of its ilk without a barrier. So they do not cover it - the media is onboard with the embargo - to not encourage people and put out reminders to people far and wide who are contemplating killing themselves. Suicide is an awful thing, just the worst for families, friends, and those sufferring with the mental health stuff beforehand. For anyone here feeling alot of thoughts about it, please get help, it sounds lame, but it beats the alternative.
