What the hell are they doing with a balloon that has an inviting compartment for a kid to float away in? Anything wrong that could have happened would have been merely unfortunate, but not a tragedy. Looks like a hoax, anyway.
Look, I agree the news is driven more towards ratings at the expense of good journalism sometimes. But are you people shaking your fist when the news runs a weather report, recaps sports events, or ends the show with a puff piece on kids doing some school project? That stuff is pretty insignificant to deaths around the world too. Are people expecting a 24 hour international war/catastrophic events channel around here?
the important message here is to be extremely concerned every time there is a report of a missing child. in addition to this, you need to seek the help of a higher spiritual power in order to ensure that the child that might have been in a box that might have been attached to a balloon that probably wasn't powerful enough to get off the ground is OK. don't worry about the children that are in serious trouble. just worry about the ones that might be in trouble if they make the national news. don't do any research into the actual situation, just immediately start worrying and seeking the power of the supernatural. even when it's absolutely apparent that it's a hoax, continue to give the family attention.
I'm honestly curious if something happened to you related to this sort of issue. You really have some frustration over this. I really think it's as simple as some people just feel for other people when they hear about bad things happening. I'm curious why this seems so hard for you to believe. Luckily this just turned out to be nothing.

First of all, I honestly think that if the kid were in the balloon and fell out to his death, you, umm, wouldn't find it so funny. But I don't put anything past anybody these days. Second, Manny, if you had a teacher in high school who would actually say something like that to a student or even about an adult to a group of students, that teacher has extremely poor judgment and is lucky he/she didn't get fired for it.
I miss Madeline Stowe. Remember seeing a photo shoot of her in my mom's Town & Country: nothing sexy or provocative, but just enough to create a mini-obsession. Then I rented that lady-cowboy movie she did, "Bad Girls," and shrivel.

I wouldn't be surprised if it was all just a publicity stunt for Wife Swap. The Wife Swap producers probably paid the loonie family half a million dollars to do this and get Wife Swap mentioned in every other minute on air to increase ratings.
I sure as hell would... 6yr old boy fell to his death after being drifted away in a freaking balloon...
