I think they should try Steve Francis out at 2nd next season.

Among all active 2nd basemen in the NL this season, Biggio ranked 3rd in HRs, 3rd in RBIs, 3rd in TBs, 10th in walks, 6th in SBs, 6th in slugging and 8th in OPS. He's still among the top 2nd basemen in the league at a fraction of the cost. Plus you have to consider the multitude of intangibles he brings to the team, such as veteran leadership, a very important component for any team, especially this one with so many young guys (where would we be w/o the leadership of Clemens, Pettite, Biggio and Bags). Biggio is a proven contributor and leader on this team, and we need him as long as he wants to be here (and as long as his production doesn't fall off dramatically).

When you get into those differences there isn't even an argument. But what do I know, I think Steve Francis is God, so all my arguments are invalid.

Compared to the rest of MLB (not just the NL, JunkYardDwg), Biggio was...

    ... 1st in HBPs
    ... 4th in runs
    ... 4th in 2Bs
    ... 5th in HRs
    ... 6th in TBs
    ... 7th in hits
    ... 8th in RBIs
    ... 10th in SLG
    ... 12th in SBs
    ... 13th in BBs
    ... 13th in OPS

I'll gladly take that production again next year, thank you.

So, wait, pgab, do you want Clemens gone, too?

I'm still waiting on a reply to my question to you. When you said that Burke should be playing 2nd base now, did you mean that you would start Burke at 2nd against the Braves on Wednesday?

Burke's defense is much better even though Biggio's wasn't bad this year compared to Kent. I hope (even though I know it won't happen) they platoon Biggio and Burke next year to keep Biggio fresh and to get Burke atbats. Due to Biggio being overused in the first half, he hit worse than Burke in several categories (BA, OBA, Slugging, etc) after the all star break.

I still think Burke will be a nice leadoff or number two hitter in the future if the Astros don't mess him up. He has time to develop with Biggio here. 1st Base is the position that concerns me unless Berkman moves back to first...then it is LF.

yeah, one guy had arguably his best season and one arguably his worst. And I'm the one being irrational.

You've been irrational everytime you've opened your mouth in this thread... and that post is no exception. Burke GOT at bats (nearly 400) and DIDN'T PRODUCE like all of you Burke lovers claimed he would at the start of the season. He'll get his at bats next season but like it or not Biggio will be our everyday second baseman next season, and he will platoon in 2007 as he is going for 3,000 hits. The bottom line is Biggio is STILL a better option then Burke even when Burke got his playing time (nearly 110 games).

I thought Biggio was done at the end of last year, it was nice to be proven wrong. I hope he continues to put up solid numbers. I would like Burke to get some playing time to develop and I think we may see that more next year.

I did not see how much the extension was for?

i thought it was irrational when you said that we were all getting too excited about signing pettite and clemens because clemens was too old and pettite had just been supported by a great yankee offense.

but this one is analagous. i've been wrong about all sorts of things...i've posted all sorts of crap here. i think you're jumping to the same conclusions about biggio that you did about clemens.

I never said clemens was done, I don't even know what you're talking about. I said Pettitte was overrated in NY, I still believe that. I'm glad he also had the best season in his career, but I still think that.

Burke played shortstop in college, and the Astros drafted him for that... but when he got to the minors he was converted to 2nd because he didn't have the tools to play short stop... so that is NOT an option.

Also, Biggo was resigned for 4 million for 1 year.

you said clemens wouldn't make that much of a difference, if i remember correctly. that he was old...getting older...and wouldn't be that much of a difference.
