Dudes and Dudettes...we have got to plan a final outing, right? I mean, we cannot let Astroworld die without a proper sendoff. If nothing else, I want to ride the Cyclone one more time and get me a t-shirt. Who's in???
What about SELENA? Don't forget about Selena. Anyway, for our senior week, we skipped and went to Ass-Throw-World. I put a penny on my knee while in the Sky Screamer, and the penny floated while we were on our way down. Awesome shiznit. You couldn't hear the siren, but everyone did. You just dropped and didn't know what hit you.
6 flags might make it seem like the parking situation has something to do with it... but its really all about the $$$$ that they're gonna get for that prime real-estate, and to not have to worry about the constant maintenance and refurbishing of rides is an added bonus. Besides nostalgia-sake, Astroworld wasn't really much of a place to go to for the real "thrill-ride" seekers.
I've been telling my kids about going to that place for years. They are finally old enough to enjoy it, but we won't get to Houston before it closes. A little more notice would have been nice.
goodbye Skyscreamer, Ultra Twister, and X-LR8!!! greased lightning and texas cyclone were my favorite. excalibur, the viper, those are some old rides!!
Disney to Texas rumor forum http://www.network54.com/Forum/17924 Let the rumours stop and the truth begin by KATYRESIDENT I have considerable proof that the Disey corporation is constructing a large Florida-like theme park immediately west of Grand Parkway, (99) near Katy Mills. What knowledge comes behnd this? As follows: 1) Katy is a booming area that simply invites massive theme parks. There are already numerous supplemental attractions such as Forbidden Gardens, Katy Mills, Indigo Earth, a large Cinemark movie theater, a gorgeous new library and high school, as well as botanical gardens. 2) I am involved in the real estate business in Houston and there is a GREAT deal of anonymous purchasing going on. I don't know who, but it smells like a mouse. 3) I-10 is undergoing a renovation that rivals the great freeways of Los Angeles. I have lived in or near Katy my entire life and never have I felt the need for a highway QUITE this large. 4) Outdoor sports are experiencing a massive renaissance. Enough to constitute an attraction in itself. A dozen or so first class golf courses are being constructed or have already been built. The tennis scene is thriving. New red clay courts have been built near the Mills and Taylor High School seems to always win state. 5) George Bush Intercontinental Airport is undergoing a renovation that will put it in league of Heathrow, LAX, JFK, O'hare, Hartsfeld, Narita, De Gaulle, and Frankfurt. THIS IS AMPLE EVIDENCE!!!!!!!!!!!!!! AMPLE! -A lifetime Katy, TX resident.
Man.....I met more chicks there during middle school, and I saw so many concerts there during high school and early college. This sucks. Who remembers the river of no return?
Damn, Astroworld has good memories. When I first visited Houston, I went there during Haloween time. This random girl comes up to me and bops me on the head with one of those plastic beach baseball bats. I ended up going out with her for 6 months. So long Astroworld, so long plastic beach baseball bat. So long oversized Tweety bird. So long, over inflated basketball that would never go in the hoop. Good times.
when i read this i actually cried out loud "OOOOOHHH!!!" so loud that my roommate came in to see what the problem was. ive been going since before i can remember (mid-late 70's). ill never forget the bumper cars that they took out in the early 80's, the haunted house with the wacky tilted floor, the giant cowboy boot-slide and the giant 6-shooter swing ride. some of my best times on acid were at astroworld. we would always come during halloween and trip - what a blast! i saw richard marx and wilson phillips at starplex (free ticket...i swear i didnt pay!). but i did pay to see dee-lite and the happy mondays and i also paid to see morrissey. and waterworld is my all time favorite waterpark. i like it better than schlitterbahn even. RIP
Never thought it would ever happen. Thought it was a staple of Houston that would never go away. I'll miss it.
I'll take her. J/K........... I was going to take my sister just last weekend, but we didn't have time.....it's been a long time since we've been.
I stopped going after the raised ticket prices sky high. Nothing like paying $40 bucks then waiting for an hour in Houston heat for each ride.
astroworld had become a ****hole the last few years anyway some good rides granted, but meh, I won't miss it that much
This truly saddens me. I had already planned on taking my son for the first time next month. He's too young for the big rides, but I was really looking forward to that being something he could get excited about every summer. Like his first ride on the Cyclone in a few years. Now, his first trip will also likely be his last. I really hope we can find someone to take over. I really don't want to see it go, and never realized it was in any real financial crunch. How in the hell can Fiesta Texas survive and Astroworld can't??? C'mon. Let's find a way to keep this park around. Houston has lost enough of its traditions already.
It's too late for that I'm afraid. The park is actually already sold from what I'm hearing - to a real estate development company. Look for the newest luxury apartments too. Worst part for me - the Texas Cyclone will not be moved. It will simply be torn down. Geez, all emotional over a theme park. A lot of childhood memories just got sold.
The Disney rumors have been going on for nearly a decade now. I remember around 2000, everyone thought they were set to build outside of Magnolia, right across from the Renaissance Festival.
