Not so much that they are hyping it as a non-rare event, but that they are insinuating that it is ridiculous that there aren't real time systems or that transponders can be switched off.

Would be weird if this stretched into another 3 weeks of confusion and misinformation only to turn out to be the most elaborate and expensive April Fools joke in recorded history.

I had a dream last night that they found the plane, everyone survived, but Malaysian Airlines didn't tell anyone, they just brought the families into a room, and then out came the passengers alive....obviously I would be overcome with joy, but then I would be piiiiiiisssssssedddd off like no other!

It's looking more and more like they won't find this thing for a very long time. Not knowing has to be eating them alive.

What would be weirder if the plane just randomly lands one day at the point of destination and everybody on board did not realize they went missing.

I'm tired of British accents on TV period. The american public adds 40 IQ points to any moron with a British accent no matter the region (English Northerners are generally r****ded) and deducts it from southerners.

Didn't this same sort of thing happen with that Air France flight a few years ago? How long was it before they found that one?

Debris was found very quickly, like 36 hours? Took two years to find the bulk of the plane, but that was because of how deep in the ocean it was.

Summary of information that has come out from White House sources:

-Believe the plane continued to fly for four hours after losing transponder signal
-Believe the transponder and communications were shut off intentionally. Apparently one communication system was shut down and then transponder was shut down 14 minutes later
-Have signals that were received indicated the plane was headed towards the Indian Ocean
-Had enough fuel to reach the ocean
-White House sources believe the plane has crashed in the Indian Ocean.

Could we have another SilkAir flight 185 on our hands... also featured a well-experienced pilot at the helm...?

I haven't really watched cable news for years, but I've checking in for this story. Has it always been this bad? The hosts throw out uneducated speculation about the missing plane that is equally ridiculous to random internet conspiracies. There are panels of experts on CNN who are either misinformed or use as many words as possible to say "I don't know the answer to your question, so here's some hot air."

For example, 2 or 3 days ago someone on airliners.net posed the possibility that Malaysia Airlines may not pay to subscribe to the ACARS maintenance data service, despite the fact that the capability is built into the plane. Now, today it is coming out (Link) that those satellite pings that are supposedly leading US intelligence to search the Indian Ocean are the automatic communications the plane's SATCOM technology makes with the satellites to establish a connection for ACARS data transmission. And, not surprisingly, the airline does not subscribe to the full service, so none was sent. Why is it the mega media outlets cannot find an aviation expert to get on board with their news team to ask these questions that pilots on a message board toss around without any effort?
