20 years sounds about right with the current projections. But I wouldn't be surprise if it's sooner. The rate of change is so fast and with the expanding web of ideas and communications, I don't even know if you can predict what it will look like in 10 years.

I'm surprised this didn't happen sooner.

It's been pretty clear Boehner been on the outs with rank and file Republicans. It's a testament to his political skill he was able to hang on this long.

That might happen but I doubt it. The GOP has been very successful with redistricting and the fact that they were able to hold onto the House even though their candidates received less votes total than the Dems in 2012 shows the institutional hold they have built.

At least some of us liberals give credence and some degree of respect to the other side. ****tards like you would never give one ounce of respect to anyone named Pelosi, Reid, and especially Obama- mainly because you're too densified by your party's propaganda.

Much respect to Boehner- he at least tried.

Agree - November/December is going to potentially be very ugly with the next debt ceiling problem coming up. If the new speaker is truly hardline, we have a very real chance of a self-created economic disaster.

Boehner was tasked with herding children.

Now, the tallest child will be in charge.

Senator Nelson from Florida's one-sentence statement

“After Speaker Boehner fulfilled his dream of the pope speaking, he is just plain tired of dealing with the right wing extremists,"

Boehenr is as incompetent as he ever was. Good riddance, idiot.

Now speaking of incompetence, I know you are clearly quite jazzed and probably thinking "now we'll get somebody who's going to be REALLY WILLING drive the country into a ditch" for the fauxtrage du jour, but chance's are that's not going to happen either, and after a few years we'll get to listen to you and your fellow interweb titans mumbling that successor not passed the proper purity test by not dynamiting the Rayburn Building.

    I can't wait! :) Oh wait, I can...cause, don't care.

People thinking it doesn't matter who the next speaker is just aren't paying attention.

If the next speaker is a hardliner that is more willing to satisfy the tea party extremists, the likelihood of a seriously damaging financial situation is increasingly likely. That doesn't mean it would ruin America, but there are a lot of people who will be seriously hurt by a self inflicted economic crisis. Not everyone in this country can just shrug off a major economic crisis.

Why is everyone deifying Boehner? He failed at his job. He's a relic from another era. He campaigned on getting rid of the very tools that allow leadership to manage a caucus.

And he made a concious decision to only pass legislation with Republicans and then simultaneously failed to mobilize Republicans to vote for his bills. You can blame the tea party for splitting the Republican caucus but Boehner could have marginalized that group early on by using Democrats to pass legislation. He instead committed to forging legislation only with Republicans and failed over and over.

People point out all the time that Obama was naive enough to believe that the Republicans would work with him. Boehner did the same dumb mistake and thought that the tea party could be managed and corralled into voting for his agenda. Obama at least caught on to this after 2012. Boehner seemed clueless as ever.

Boehner was a lousy speaker, period. The Democrats had difficult caucuses to manage through the 60s with the split between Southern Democrats and the rest of the party. Boehner should have struck quickly in 2010 to take control of the agenda and subdue the tea party. He took a passive approach that ultimately set some dangerous precedents that are still haunting him. Things like shutting down the government, failing on must pass legislation, letting the debt ceiling expire, etc.. are all happening because he didn't send a message early on those items.

The Republicans need a Tom Delay type who will rule with an iron fist. Boehner wasn't going to be that guy.

It's really just fear about the prospect of the Republicans replacing him with someone better.

The next word out of your mouth after this was to call someone on the other side a 'r****d'.............

Boehner lied constantly to the Republican base. Good riddance.

he was impotent, ineffectual, crybaby, uninspiring

I don't think the liberals much like Boehner, but recognize that he was a mitigating buffer for the worst impulses of the right. If he was being replaced by someone more centrist, I'm sure the distaste for Boehner would shine through. Instead, we'll probably get someone even further right than him, making him look palatable by comparison.
