Officials have closed all Los Angeles Unified School District campuses Tuesday morning after receiving a "credible threat" of violence involving backpacks and packages left at campuses.

Authorities said they plan a search operation of all of the LAUSD's more than 900 schools. The nation's second-largest school district has more than 700,000 students.

“I think it’s important to take this precaution based on what has happened recently and what has happened in the past,” LAUSD Superintendent Ramon Cortines said.

The move comes less than two weeks after two shooters killed 14 people in San Bernardino in what was the deadliest terrorist attack on U.S. soil since 9/11.

Fearing the safety of schools and its students, Cortines said he couldn’t take a chance, so he asking police to search all campuses, adult school and early education centers before reopening Wednesday.

Officials said the threat came in electronic form and was many to numerous but unspecified campuses. As a result, they made the decision to close them all down for the day.

Cortines said the threat was rare, considering the many threats the districts receives daily.

The Los Angeles Police Department and FBI were assisting with the threat investigation, said Los Angeles School Police Chief Steve Zipperman.

“The threat is still being analyzed,” he said. “ We have chosen to close our schools today until we can be sure our campuses are safe.”

Students who already arrived at school will be supervised until parents can pick them up officials said.

"Parents/Guardians please bring proper ID when picking up your child at school. They will be required," the LAUSD said in a statement.

I was at work/school this morning, and heard rumor of it, but it hadn't broken on television or the internet yet. I talked to the plant manager and he hadn't heard anything either or gotten any email. He said he would try and get ahold of his supervisor and find out what was going on.

I started getting ready for the day when the plant manager had all of us that were there get our belongings and leave that school would be closed for the day. So we left. I talked with some of the other teachers who hadn't heard and arrived later. Police were already there with tactical gear/bullet proof vests on, etc.

Crazy stuff. But it looks like I'll have some extra time to knock out some errands I need to do.

I don't think even the most clever high school kid, on his own, could prank the whole district. Must be based on some pretty serious intel. Hope everyone can stay safe and they can get to the bottom of this.

How hard would it be to do? Just break into someones network or use an anonymous proxy. Send some threatening emails. How are you going to trace those emails if they are bounced of a bunch of servers?

Some 13 year old kid could pretty easily do this.

    They started finals yesterday

Terrorists don't call you and tell you "hey, i might blow yall up today, so run"

No idea whats going on so all of the kids are off, and the parents of alot of young kids probably had to take off work suddenly.

Starting to think that they intercepted a message moreso than just getting a phone call from someone because there is alot of activity going on from different agencies. FBI, as well as police forces and military.

Im sure they've gotten plenty of bomb threats but I've never seen this happen before.
