had the police been adequately prepared and staffed, the riot never would have happened and we would not be talking about anybody instigating anything

Sure, but the president and his coup plotters didn't want adequate protection. They would have made sure that there were ways around whatever protection had been arranged. Maybe it would have helped, but the fraudulent electors and others in congress would have still tried to delay certification. The reason they all wanted to do this was to produce a result contrary to votes of the people and electors. That was the intent of Trump and numerous Republicans.

They wanted to make sure the certification was delayed. It was delayed and the election wasn't actually certified until January 7th.

The plan from the leaders of the coup was never for them to overturn the results right away. It was always to simply delay and create chaos so they could vote in congress by the state.

It was organized, coordinated, illegal. It was absolutely an attempted coup.

    Melber has more.

This talking point from the right doesn’t hold up against the evidence. The fact is the executive branch was the hold up for sending the National Guard. The capital police are not an entity that would ever be adequate to handle a mob of thousands with some militarized tactics being deployed. The failure lies as the fact that the national guard was not there at the beginning of the day.

Could Pelosi have been using her political power to pressure Chris Miller and Trump into ordering the National Guard the day before??? Possibly or it could have made it worse if Trump used that pressure to double down. The fact is Chris Miller the week prior essentially gave a stand down order to the DC National Guard. Here’s the memo if you want to read it yourself.

    https://www.justsecurity.org/wp-con...ance-for-the-DC-National-Guard-Jan-4-2021.pdf

This memo basically tries to have it both ways and caused the confusion that led to the delay.

Did the capital police also fail?? Hell yeah. The building should have been hardened and shut down as to where a kitchen mouse couldn’t find an entry point. But was it the job of essentially mall security level police officers to know how to do that?? No. They would never be tasked for anything like that to begin with and such they were doomed to fail.

I would encourage you to refrain from lofting out this FoxNews talking point if you want to try and seem like a non MAGA right winger. The facts undercut your attempt at trying to blame Nancy Pelosi for attacking herself and putting her own life in danger.

Well congratulations on admitting you believe right wing conspiracy theories instead of easily recorded facts.

Yes. That was a failure. It wouldn't have prevented the attempted coup. The police weren't ever going to be enough to stop the mob.

Trump had wanted National Guard there initially to protect his supporters but not the capitol or members of Congress or Pence.

As @dobro1229 mentioned. The Capitol police had been given an order to stand down from Trump’s crew.

The riots were only a very small part of the whole plot.

We can look at the actions of the rioters. They pre-planned points to breach, stationed members there, etc. However, the President of the United States and others were working to make sure they weren't stopped. That planning happened prior to the day itself.

Tell me, if they'd decided there was danger and were making plans to stop the danger but then Trump's official orders them to stand down, what does it matter how much prep they had done?

    No personal responsibility….

It was certainly a test for our democracy…. It was your side that ran the Election Deniers for office along with the legislation to cement the Election Deniers and fortunately they lost during the midterms.

Your side is still trying to find ways to circumvent democracy. Your side is still questioning our elections. Why is that?

Yes the Capitol PD were unprepared thst doesn’t excuse those who under room the riot and those who incited it. That would be like saying that those who stormed the MPD 4th precinct during George Floyd. were less responsible than Mayor Frey for ordering the pullout.

Yes one made what I still consider a horrible tactical decision while the other were the ones who actually broke the law.

You had those who helped and those who did nothing. Nowhere was there opposition and that is the crux of the problem. The majority of republicans were either too cowardly or unethical to oppose Trump and the coup attempt.

The coup didn’t fail due to opposition. It failed due to incompetence. Two years later and you had Republicans running on the big lie. He didn’t get pushback until the midterms were an utter failure.

Add to that, that initially you had Republicans helping to formulate implement the plan.

The Capital police's job isn’t to protect against an insurrection and a self-coup attempt. They were never nor should they be prepared for such. The failure, first and forest, was electing a morally bankrupt character. But even more than that is a party that refuses to hold that character accountable at multiple opportunities, including after Jan 6. The system can only hold with the people in charge doing the right things. You can have as many laws as you want, but if you choose immoral and unethical characters that have even now said they have no respect for the Constitution, you risk all of it.

The Republican party and its supporters will continue to try to minimize and deflect away from the real root cause - a morally and ethically bankrupted party that needs to be fully reformed.

This all reminds me of how if the Afghani airport security had simply done its job, there would have been universal praise for the US withdrawal from that country.
