They didn't break the law. Not being escorted after they were invited in, isn't the same as trespassing.

I agree they should have followed the directions. But I believe the directions were they needed to be escorted which is different than an order to leave.

    https://www.cnbc.com/2022/07/18/doj...nlawful-entry-arrests-capitol-police-say.html

So sure they should have left or found staffers to escort them. But they weren't trespassing.

The motivation was also different. They were there to make comedy.

On almost every level including the criminal one, it was not like Jan. 6th.

    There was no double standard.

    you just keep re-opening the door . . . :D

have you watched some of those Jan 6 videos? the dude with the antlers? the guy swiping Pelosi's podium?

arguably an awfully large number of the Jan 6 "rioters" were there to make comedy also

Those Jan 6th folks were making unintentional comedy. It wasn't their intent.

No we can't. But we can know the majority of their intent, and we can know the most likely intent of every single one of the Jan. 6th mob.

We can also definitely know the intent of all of the Colbert staffers.

well, we can infer that many of them might actually have had "patriotic" intent in breeching the Capitol barricades. Does that "intent" affect our evaluation of their trespass?

and remember . . . a riot is the language of the unheard.

We don't need to read their minds.

They were chanting "hang Mike Pence"

Your pro Terrorism hill here is.....probably not a good place to die.

    1. We can't infer that they had patriotic intent. Had they not heard the chants of Hang Mike Pence, had they not seen the damage and assault of law enforcement agents, we might have been able to infer that. The fact that they saw that and continued to do what they did makes it an unreasonable inference.

    2. Intent does not change the trespassing. It is why I separated the two issues. Not only did the Colbert staff not trespass, as a separate point, they had different intent.

    3. Rioting is absolutely the language of the unheard. I'll go even further than that. Trump was a result of a lot of people who felt they weren't listened to by politicians for a long time. His supporters felt they weren't heard or didn't have their issues addressed for a long time. I agree.

again, the intention point is simply to question the judgement that "intention" should affect our evaluation of the act (in this case the act of trespassing).

I do not believe that people are consistent when they apply such a standard. That's all.

And honestly I really don't care about the Colbert crew. I think they probably embody a type of elitist rules-don't-apply-to-me-because-I-work-for-a-celebrity ethos, but that's just a hunch.

on that last point, something I posted earlier . . . related:

    https://althouse.blogspot.com/2022/07/the-worst-line-i-ever-wrote-as-pundit.html

    excerpt:

"The worst line I ever wrote as a pundit... was... 'If by now you don’t find Donald Trump appalling, you’re appalling.'"

Says Bret Stephens — in "I Was Wrong About Trump Voters" (NYT) — about the first thing he ever wrote about Trump. That was in August 2015, and he went on to write "dozens of columns denouncing Trump as a unique threat to American life, democratic ideals and the world itself."

He now regrets attacking the Trump voters. Because it wasn't effective?

Telling voters they are moral ignoramuses is a bad way of getting them to change their minds. What were they seeing that I wasn’t?... What Trump’s supporters saw was a candidate whose entire being was a proudly raised middle finger at a self-satisfied elite that had produced a failing status quo. I was blind to this....

He was part of that "self-satisfied elite." Does he genuinely take responsibility for his failure to see from the viewpoint of the non-elite? Or is this a repositioning in the hope of regaining power over the deplorables?

Absolutely. As you said, instead of sentencing that old lady with cancer to 2m jail time, she should be tried for treason and shot.

The committee is getting salty. They just showed Josh Hawley’s fist in the air to the rioters and then footage of him running out of the Senate chambers as the mob got closer.

Secret service agents protecting Pence called families to say goodbye that day.

The WH NSC was monitoring live. Another reason why everyone there was pushing and begging Trump to forcefully tell his supporters to stop and go home. Instead, Trump tweeted attacking Pence. "Pouring gasoline on the fire" the two witnesses today said.

McConnell had just as much responsibility for the Capitol security as Pelosi. Somehow certain people forget that.
